We just done Iceland in winter and it's amazing.
-11 was the coldest we got down to and it did make me beard freeze.
It was just going to be me and my wife as her 40 Birthday present but we had to take our 3 younger children. Then the 2 older ones wanted to come. So it ended up a full family holiday which was great as the 2 older ones never want to come with us.
We went for 3 nights and only took hand luggage. We had to do this on the cheap. We hired a 8seater land cruiser which done it's job. It did get stuck a couple of times in deep snow but a few wiggles back and forth got us out.
The apartment we had was fantastic, heated floors throughout including the garage and even the driveway was heated. Mains hot water is pumped into the house's.
We done the golden circle. The Reykjavik bit we done on the first day and the rest on the second day and it took all day. The next day we tried to get to Vik along the south coast but the road was closed due to strong winds cars were literally being blown off the road. So we traveled through the lava field which is well worth it.
The whole cost including airport parking, fuel, all food and £60 worth of duty free and card transactions was £1428 ... £204 per person
So Iceland can be done on the cheap.
