I went to Maplin at Crewe today, to get a TV RF transmitter, to send the signal from the scart on the sky plus to a seperate TV in the bedroom, for my mother in law, coming out of Hospital, and will be bed ridden.

I agreed with the "lad" on the desk that if it didn't do the job I could bring it back for a refund. She quoted the returns policy, I quoted that a member of staff representing Maplin entered into a verbal contract with me, in that I could bring it back for a refund if it didn't work as I was concerened about interference.

Any how, it worked over a distance of 10 feet in the same room, but not next door in the bedroom, (Bungalow). All RF transmitting appliances switched off, WiFi, phones etc just in case, no difference.

So took it back for a refund..... as agreed.

The girl standing in for the manager said, she couldn't give a refund because I had opened the box.:doh

But it doesn't work...... :doh

They refused to test it in the shop. Didn't know how to...:nenau

Said they would send it away and I'll have it back in 10 days.....

I said this is unsatisfactory, and I left the shop with the item.

So tomorrow it's...... phone Mapiln, email Maplin, and I may take it up with Trading Standards....

AND I still have to find a way to sort the TV out without using RFI.

How far can you cable the yellow video signal, and the red and white audio signals? They only have to go 30 feet.

I'll let you know the outcome....:nenau

could u not alter bedroom, move tv closer to wall to next bedroom, hastle i kno but keeps mil happy!

No problem mate you can send those signals hundreds of meters, I have when stuck used twisted pair phone wire and sent video over 50 meters with no problem, Rick

I walked around with the TV with a long extension lead and the picture was cr*p and if someone walked between the 2 tv's all signal was lost.

I bought the more expensive one with line of site of 100metres, but it doesn't like walls.

Might just do that, I have wired video cameras longer distance than that..

Always best if you know it has been done before, thanks for the info.:thumb2

at the Maplin store close to me they are very helpful, i took a stereo back not long ago with not receipt 7 months old and got a cash refund. I once complained by phone to their head office about disabled access as they put some much stuff in the aisles, they sent me vouchers and sorted it out! I think this must be a stropy staff issue - complain!

none of these RF contraptions will work well as they have been allocated a crap radio frequency in order to stop you interfering with your next doors stuff trouble is it does not work well at all, have the same problem with RF room thermostats, they don't, Rick

if running cables why no run coax, then can use a magic eye in remote bedroom to operate sky+ box.

ive used thes radio kits with mixed results, through a floor though dont suppose a floor is
as thick as a wall, clearly a chimney breast type wall is a real killer, i've seen wifi lost
where a double wall, well two were inbetween.

ref taking back.

clearly your not trying for straight change of mind as opened and tested.

retailer does have right to confirm fault, ideally when returned but for complex
items could take in and refer to say workshop. mind would think in maplins with
all that tv gear around couple of techies could rig it up in branch.

so if left with them to test shold be quoting a turn around time, fear since
many quote a max repair time of 28 days it could be up to that to test
though should be way less as only need to diagnose not repair and once repair
needed is proven can process refund.

shouldn't you be reading? :augie :lol

pants.

i'd just remind the manager that you didnt buy the box, you bought the item within it, and it doesnt work.

maybe they have had so many complains about these that the returns rate is outside their 'margin' and they are clamping down?

Well I have just drafted an email which names people, so I won't post that part, but I have quoted the following:

Extract from the sale of goods act 1979:
When you buy something from a shop you are entering into a legally binding contract. Therefore they don’t have to give you a refund simply because you have changed your mind. Only if one of your statutory rights is breached (i.e. that the item is damaged, of poor quality or not fit for purpose) do they have to give you your money back.

So clearly Maplin should give me a total refund, under... unfit for purpose.

We will see how it goes.
Best regards,
Rustic

Id go back see the real manager.Maplins as said above are normally excellent on not suitable or not wanted returns so long as the packaging isnt damaged so they can stick it back out on the shelf.

As far as unserviceable goes they aint got a leg to stand on and the idjit you saw is completely wrong. Their policy is quite simply that if they cant prove it in the shop they may send the item away to be tested :thumb2 (and i was told that by a manager from there :D)

fit for purpose well, that would come down to them confirming fault, or you could get
your own engineers report and submit to them.

i'd suggest you deal wiht head office, branches tend to be too hot on SOGA sales of
goods act, they tend to follow generic procedures laid down by head office.

i am with you rustic, but as an insider at a similiar retailer fore warned is fore armed.

tbh the service levels at stores like maplins can vary based on if dealing with a manager
or staff. i find supermarkets and argos handle thes sorts of issues far better, cynically
could say dont want an argument at till, maybe.

Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Argos, Asda, Wickes, all the same, :thumb2 :thumb2

It doesn't work... The only question they have is... refund or replacement Sir..?
I'm within my rights, so it might be down to staff training.

I remember something going around the net, on key phrases and what they mean...

He could benefit from additional training.... means, he is a *anker and hasn't got a clue.
Quite appropriate, as I wrote that the store manager could do with additional training.... :lol :lol

A dickwad shop assistant (ooh same as me!) is mixing up two bits of legistlation.

If it had been faulty they are entitled to try and repair it. But European law allows you to reject the item within 30 days.

But if it was unfit for purpose then its an immediate refund, no question.

But this one falls between two stools, as it may be perfectly fit for whatever it says on the box, but doesn't meet your requirement. But of course since you stated that requirement, a bit like the bloke who bought the auto T2 recentlyafter being told the wrong towing weight (what happened to him?), the contract is null and void if it doesn't meet that requirement.

Personally I would have asked for the manager and demanded to know what legislation they were working to....but bottom line is you will get a result, and frankly the further up the food chain you take it, the more grovelling there will be LOL:thumb2

Thanks for the link Briggie, but this is also 2.4 Ghz, so may have the same problem.

I emailed the Maplin Tech department, and asked them if it will work in a bungalow over a distance of 20 feet, they replied yes it will......

So unfit for purpose....:thumb2

They haven't responded to the full refund bit yet, so I asked again......

Martin Lewis site might like to hear about this one....:naughty
