Yes managed to get a manual for the VP44 pump and it is a very different beast to the VE pump, for a start it does not have a "control sleeve" which on the VE is used to control the amount of fuel injected, instead the VP has a needle valve on the high pressure side which is controlled by a solenoid controlled by the ECU on the pump.
Now this is the bit that matters, first off the MAX high pressure on this pump is 14000 psi as compared to 2000 for a VE, next is the solenoid valve is on the high pressure side direct ie before the porting to each cylinder, what this means is @ 2000 pump revs (4000 engine revs) this valve operates 8000 times a minute (2000 x 4 cylinders) not only does it open and close that many times but each open and close is timed so as to control the amount of fuel.
It does not take a genius to work out that even the slightest stickiness of this valve means serious running problems, and veg is sticky, what I have described is a little simplyfied, but I think you get the idea, Rick
