Hi guys just rigged up my nearly new moonraker minor cb radio which has 40 channels but what I need to know is can I talk to other people who have an 80 channel cb and if so which channels are compatible or is it channel 1 on mine too channel 1 on theirs ? I'm slightly lost with the 40 channels and 80 channels its all plumbed in with an nice mag mount aerial. Also the squelch button when I turn it one way all I get is interferance until I adjust it back again, do I have to keep the squelch button just before I get the interferance or leave the interferance noise so I can talk. Sorry for the daft questions but I need someone to explain in english as to how and what I should be doing. Thanks paul

i will answer your questions in order , as there are a few of them

yes you can talk to others who have a 80 channel radio , providing you are both on the same band , in which case channel numbering will be the same

the squelch is to cut out weak signals , so if you back it off completely the reciever will pick up all signals including fm hiss

any more info please pm me

regards

pete

Yeah 'on the side'.......just to elaborate, the other 40 channels are often used sur le continent.

Normal practice is to sit on Channel 14 and wait for or make a contact, then agree a channel you'll both go to to continue.

Channel 19 is clear for emergencies IIRC?

But, given the small number of users these days not sure how much this etiquette is actually observe any more. :( It was much better in the days when it first came over from the US and was totally illegal.:augie

almost correct my friend ......

in the " old days " .... channel 14 was used for home based " breakers " ........ where as channel 19 was used for " mobile breakers "......... channel 9 was the emergency channel ....... but to be honest these days , nobody bothers with what channel they are on

Christ I must be even older than you FFS.....when I started everyone used '1-4 for a copy' and 19 was just another channel, as was 9 (I think 9 was only adopted for such use later because it had been reserved as an emergency channel in countries where CB was legal, which of course it wasn't in the UK until years later).....even the 'CQ CQ CQ DX' mob used 14 amid much piss-taking from the rank and file LOL.....ahhh sun spots, happy days.

happy days indeed ...... old imported american am sets ....... not forgetting nawty people who operated on ssb and used big linear amplifiers too ...... very nawty :augie

indeed - got my first set from my uncle in Louisville, Kentucky in early 1973...at that time is was almost as quiet as it is now in many parts of the country and you had to have a disguised twig on your motor - not that the old bill were actually the slightest bit interested in reality.

Went to shite IMHO around 76-77 after that bloody Convoy film got everyone 'rubber-ducking'.....:doh

remember this little lot paul ?

.

what would be the difference accept the extra 40 channels which im lead to believe are for europe and im never going to use the truck in europe ?

well they can be used in the UK also, Just more channels to utilize if needed. Also the CBs mentioned are better quality.

also when good dx conditions you can chat to people who are in all sorts of places like germany etc which can be fun.
