Before some bright spark says it no it hasn't, it's got a lead on it so that it can't escape:doh

When the oil seals are leaking on a diesel engine turbo the engine feeds on the oil and eventually destroys it's self unless you can stall it.

Well it's not too hard to understand how to stall a manual vehicle. How on earth could you stall a automatic?
Or do you stick hand brake on get out and run like chuff:lol

there is a couple of variations on what a diesal runaway is, but I think a true runaway is as you describe the turbo running away, it turns itself into a little jet engine and is very difficult to stop, stalling wont make any difference and the engine is not running, the turbo is

its quite a big thing on the net converting turbos into jet engine as they have most of the components for a jet engine

would love to build one some day

Do not know about turbo run away with engine not running, but engine runaway on an auto is not good, best you can do is smother it, pull off the easiest intake hose and cover the the hole that is sucking, do not use your hand, or rag, a bit of stiff board is best, Rick

No I've not heard of turbo runaway but it sounds fun:naughty

Yeah those were my thoughts too Rick but I'm sure that will be quite difficult and not pleasent either. Mind you not had a turbo go in that way and only hear about it no and again so chances of it happening will be quite slim I'm sure.

I think that often when it happens the engine is revving so hard that it can't be stalled as selecting 5th gear and dumping the clutch just burns the clutch out they usually just seize when they run short of oil. I have never had one run away but if it can't be stalled I think running like chuff sounds like a good idea.

What about sticking a carrier bag over the air filter...
Cheap fix for 5p lol :augie

I actually stalled my auto by stuffing it in reverse while I was driving forward.
Wasn't intensional though, for some reason I thought I was in 2 so pushed it forward thinking i was putting it into D.
I was in D and stuffed it into R.
Not recommended and don't know if it would work in a runaway situation.

i may have misunderstood the article i was reading, In theory for the oil to be fed into the turbo the engine would have to be running, its gonna make a mess

You sure that will work again? Bloody lucky mate

I have experienced runaway twice, once with a Comma TS3 3 cylinder 6 piston two stroke commercial motor that had its oil bath filter over filled and managed to stall it, the other was one of my more recent scrappers that I posted picks of piston damage due to ceramic glow plug tip loss, stalled it the same, auto is a bit different and no Rustic a plastic bag will just burst, it needs something more solid, Rick

Would not work with runaway, Rick

Thing is when the engine is screaming like you have never heard it before & about to run out of lubricant My b***s are nowhere near big enough to allow me to pull bonnet catch & lean in on top of the engine with my Tesco bag for life stuffing it in the air intake.

I still prefer the run like chuff option:lol

Wouldn't want to try it again that's for sure.
I was only at low speed with low revs, with engine runaway it would be revving it's nuts off.

Block air intake with a plank of wood, then a rag over the wood To stop any small air intake gaps.
