i believe the fixed hubs would be more reliable, but i thing the autos are better for traction.....could be talking rubbish, just remember reading about it somewhere :)

the reason for the auto hubs is that the front diff is only connected when in 4x4, less noise and better mpg......... but they do break or stick and get hot. regards bri

Better traction? :augie

Autos/manuals are better for less drag on the transmission so should equal slightly better MPG compared to fixed as the front shafts/diff will be turning.

Fixed hubs means if locked then you are turning all the front drive assembly, if unlocked and you need 4 wheel then you got to get out and pee around locking them, not so easy if you are up to your axles in mud, now permanently locked hubs with a Lokka diff fitted is a different story, but there is no problem with auto hubs if they receive a little maintenance from time to time, yes they can break the brake rings but only if abused and not greased from time to time, and if you off road a lot then that can mean pulling and checking every outing, I missed once and auto hub and wheel bearings full of muddy water, if it had been a road going truck I would not have got home, Rick

so by chucking it into 4 wheel drive i lock my hubs? there isnt any adjustment on
later terry's you see. just a bit confused how they work as nothing seems to be written about them?? thanks for replies guys :D

so, in 4wd my hubs are all locked anyway, as they are fixed to the shaft, the only weak point is the front diff slipping? at the price of mpg and front diff oil changes more often? please please correct me if i am wrong peeps!

If your hubs are in constant drive, then as said everything on the front is turning all the time, put it in 4 wheel and then the front drives, but out of 4 wheel lots of extra bhp to turn that lot, oh and the prop is in with that constantly turning lot and I am told no grease nipples! front diff slipping????? do not think the front diff is a slipper, Rick

Hope all is clear Ryan, and all, if I have not explained to your understanding, do not be slow in coming back for a more precise explanation, Rick

Nah take it to bits then tell me in your own words how it works it is complicated but simple, Rick

i'm fitting that one to my terrano as it's good, but the sticking one currently on my truck will be getting taken apart and fixed, so i'll do a thread with pics:thumb2
