Hi guys,

I've read pretty much every post related to auto and manual hubs and have downloaded all the available PDF's here for reference... but here is the problem....

About 3 weeks ago I had no 4WD (98' Terano II 2.4l petrol) . Turns out as I suspected that one of the hubs was shot. This was replaced on the near side.

4WD now works.

The problem is that in 2WD I get a buzzing or ratchetting noise from what appears to be the driver side front wheel. From what I have read it suggests that the near side is locked in 4wd and is trying to engage the driverside.

But why would the near side be "stuck" in 4WD? Well at least this is what I am thinking?

Anyway, if I engage 4WD the noise stops .....

I've tried the forwards and backwards in 2WD to have the hubs disengage properly etc but it seems I have intermittant success at the very least. I'm hoping that its as simple as too much grease in the new auto hub on the near side... I've had a look this morning hoping there was a nut or something that was set to manual - but to no avail. The grease inside looks "adequate" but I'm not a mechanic :(

So... what do you guys think?

The side that's making the noise ... no

I know both were removed by the mechanic and reassembled

What would I be looking for... IF 4wd works as expected and the noise goes away on the drivers side?

just sounds like it hasnt unlocked properly hence the clicking

If it clicks all the time and reversing isn't sorting it out, then to use the vehicle in the mean time, engage 4H, drive forwards about 3 metres, then put it back into 2 H, then the hubs are engaged, not clicking and not connected to the transfer box, so no wind up.

However if you reverse, the hubs will unlock and may click so do same proceedure.

OK you will use more fuel, slightly heavier steering, BUT you can still drive it and even in the snow.

Then you have some time to fix it.:thumb2

Best regards, Rustic

I thought they didn't like being over-greased....anyone comment?:nenau

I read that as well, maybe the grease is stopping the brake rings from retracting or whatever moves in there.:nenau

I only lightly greased mine once, but I didn't strip the actual hub, only the brake rings when I replaced the front brake disks.

That is once in 16 years, and they still work..

If it ain't broke, don't fix it..:nenau

id think take the noisy one apart again reclean it and new grease..

you only want a small ammount of grease in the hub too much and it can fail

that would be Kamsin..

you're supposed to post the thread link Mr Club Secretary :augie

What the hell do we pay you for?????

(Mind you, I bet thats a question Mr Smallbone asks himself every day PMSL!)

had the other auto hub cleaned out ... so far so good... need to test ir proper though !

Twas Me!

Get rid of the grease, they dont like it! it clogs everthing up inside the hubs.
Strip it right back down to clean bear metal , then use copper coat.

It sounds to me that the grease is preventing the drive from dis-enguaging.
