Hi Paul,
Most modern caravans have CRIS security numbers etched on the windows, body ect.
This number can be checked for ownership, history and such. see following link.

as well as this check though, dont forget to use your intuition there have been a lot of fake cris dicuments and 'clone' caravans. Some can be hard to tell, but if its a t some ones home adress and it matches the documents and they obviuosly feelk at home and invite you in wrote a recipt ect. its a good sign, be carefull if buying from a storage site or they take you to a mates drive round the corner etc.
Make sure the number on the data plate / vn tag (by the door) and on the windows match and that there are no signs of tampering, i have seen the plates altered in situe and the new stamps tend to dent into the bodywork under the plate as it is only alloy, it should be flat, though to be fair the digits often look a bit uneven and rough on legitimate caravans, the difference being they are stamped in when the plate is off the caravan and therefore dont dent the side underneath.
Something I allways do is assume the vendor is a 'LIAR' and check everything, take gas and a regulator a battery and a hook up lead and normal 3 pin socket adapter and see everything working, remove all the cushions and check for damp in all the seams inside cupboards and under beds etc. don't take anything for granted!
Check blinds flyscreens and curtains!
ask about the spare wheel etc. and havea good look at the documents. As k the vendor to open all the side lockers etc, to see if they are familliar with the van and the locks work, make sure the cassette toilet actualy has its cassette behind the door!
Stand on something a garden wall etc. and have a good look at the roof and seams high up! and make sure the skylights work OK
It all sounds a bit over the top but doesnt take long and is a good bit of piece of mind! Im sure you have thought of most of this but it pays to be carefull.
And above all, enjoy your new caravan and the smug feeling you have got from making sure it is all A1 :wink:

I dont know what your looking for but my Dad is selling their 2 berth nearly new caravan. They bought it new about 3 years ago and have not used it much. It sits on my land. They are in there 80s now and want a camper van. the shower and water heater have never been used, its like new. If its of any interest let me know and I will get all the details :smile:

Well done that am, I have a bit of a soft spot for Avondales, and its not between my ears or in the floo before you ask :lol:
I Had one a 1978 osprey a lovely 4 berth with blown air heating by carver oven 3 burner hob, 3 way fridge and plaxtic double glazed windows! they were originaly one of the premier brands of british coach made caravans and years ahead of their time!
that one is still going strong now and belongs to one of our neighbours daughter!
if you ever down this way and loking at caravans give me a shout if you want a second opinion!

the best Avondlaes have allways been the ones with the Bird names, hanv gsaid that they dont make them anymore like all the great british caravans they have sadly gone. To be replaced by cheaper brands and models.
I rememebr once a Highbridge caravans, looking at 2 caravans side by side virtualy the same layout and size and very simmilar in everyway one an 'economy' european brand at £8999 and the other Avondale at £15999 so I suppose I can see the attraction, but still another sad blow for british manufacturing.
I like buying older caravans myself we are on late 90's at the moment, young enough to feel modern but old enough to represent very good value for money, my own caravan is a 1998 ABI also no longer in production!

When I asked about this we was watching a van on ebay, thought the van was to good to be true to be real, today got this from ebay..

It certainly does pay to be safe, even if you have no intention of loking at the caravan forst ask if you can and where it is, if they avoid the question be wary, another good question to ask next is if they would be willing to supply the Cris number from the windows so you can do a check before you go, if they suppy it there may be no need to check you can as a cheap and easy (but by no means 100% reliable!) just type it into google and see if it comes up on any forums stolen caravans register.
Itrs probably not worth paying for an HPI at this point as they could have supplied a number form any caravan or told you one digit wrong (a common ploy) for example s instead of 5 etc, just to throw the HPI out. But take the HPI number with you and you mobile, or even ask to use their phone, it will prove if it is really their house!
but to be hinest if you are so dubious you need to reach for the HPI phone, you should already be walking away!
You can also check from the Cris number if the age of the caravan is correct and if the numer relates to the right brand name of caravan just by looking at the numbers.
these questions tend to scare off the dodgey sellers and are a good first precaution! remember the old adadge:
'IF IN DOUBT DONT!'

I have now got a terrano that is costing me time and money I did'nt buy it through ebay although that is were I first saw it and there was a mobile phone number -hitfan- I phoned to view the terrano. Travelled 50 miles to see it had a test drive with trade plates as we were now at a car sales lot with an office and we felt safe :evil: I said I would go back home and bid on said terrano the nice man said no that is ok I will list it as sold to you -nerd- -blond- -hitfan- so thought I had ebay protection and that of the car sales "fit for the job" thingy wrong so wrong
When I found out the 4 wheel drive was not working I tried to take it back he laught at me and told me to chase him for my money He had not listed it as sold to me so ebay had no power to do anything,He is still trading on ebay :evil: I informed ebay about him and they are doing all they can which is simalar to what you have just recieved. So dont buy a car from Wyberton Car sales of Boston and that is my bit and dont buy from ebay member calaghan123 . Trading standards are looking at them :smile:
