How long to change both cv's?

So I'm thinking about asking one of the techs at work if he would be kind enough to do a pair of cv's on mine on the weekend.

Only problem is we are open 8-12 and he will have other bits to do.

How long should it take someone who is mechanically skilled but has never stripped a terrano before? I'm not sure wether to ask or not :eek:
 
Ask him to teach you how to do it then you won't have to bother him again :lol

Yep, also something I want to be able to do, but again time is limited somewhat. Is it sensibly doable for a mechanic?
 
are you buying new cv's or the shafts with them already on? shafts with them on shouldnt take to long with ramps etc . later terrano have fixed hubs so none of that stripping down malarky to worry about. couple of hours per side :augie
 
Big tip have a couple of upper ball joints to hand will make life a lot easier incase you snap the bolts which usually happens. Mine we're ok but big risk as didn't have new to hand
 
Ok now I'm confused :lol

So there are different types? And additional bits needed?

Does anyone have a pic of the problem area?
 
Get another set of drive shafts to keep you mobile for now & in your spare time rebuild your old ones with stronger joints if you can get them & change them over in the spring when it warms up a bit then rebuild the ones you've taken off & keep them as spares or sell them on as recon units:augie

Dude... Really...

This is me were talking about :lol I struggle to change a headlight bulb let alone a drive shaft :naughty

EDIT - I think I just need to lubricate the whole area, and come Saturday it should all play ball.
 
Which CVs are you changing, the outer ones I guess, or the inboard ones?
Why do you think they need changing?

On the earlier trucks, they rarely wear out as they don't rotate in 2 wheel drive. (auto hubs fitted). But the later ones run all the time...:doh
I doubt mine have done more than 500 miles in nearly 20 years.

My outer boot came off a while back and you guys spotted grease in the picture, I tried to re grease and seal t up but no good, as soon as we went off-roading to psych n play and popped in 4wd the typical clonking was present :rolleyes:

Worse when steering is turned (no not steering stops) :lol

I've actually got two outer cvs already, "small arm with bearing at end" :nenau :thumb2

I replaced mine around two years ago,took me a couple of hours in the cold.(On the drive).
Easier if you have a helper.

Are these the bits you take off to remove the front shockies?

If so mine were removed a couple of months ago no issues.

Do you have to remove shocks? :nenau

Nothing needs removing to take off the front shocks Alex. Not on my 04 3ltr anyway. Didn't even have to remove the wheels, just remove the bottom bolt and grind off the top nut. Although my truck is still completely standard.

I've got a pair of spare drive shafts somewhere in the shed that I have kept from the one I broke for spares should I ever need them.

Not quite Alex mate - a cv is a specific type of joint used on a driveshaft which allows the driveshaft to stay at a constant velocity (that's the cv part) no matter how steep an angle the joint is at. The universal joints used in the propshafts on the Trols and the Terranos are MUCH simpler but have a jerkier motion the greater the angle the joint is put under and so are no use at the end of the driveshafts on powered front wheels. I would guess Rick will be meaning that the inner joint is just a standard uj as it won't have to perform at as steep angles as the cv's.

Like the Terranos, the Trols use cv's at the end of the front drive shafts too but ours are protected within the axle swivel joint so we don't have to worry about split gaiters ;)
