Happy new year everyone. The starter motor on my 98 Terrano 2.7 has been a bit lazy since the day I got it nearly 4 years ago, so much so that I have had to jump start it from my Transit a few times. Decided to investigate yesterday. After about 20mins fiddling and a bit of swearing, I got the starter onto the bench. Stripped off the end cover to expose the armature and brushes. Carefully removed the brass covered brush holders, taking care that the springs didn't disappear over the garage floor, I removed the brushes and armature. The brushes were in good shape but the armature was a little scored and very dirty. A liberal dose of WD40 and a good clean up with some 400 wet and dry I had it looking presentable again. Gave the inside of the motor a good clean up as well. Reassembled and fitted again, reconnected the battery, turn the key, wait for the glow light to go out, turn the key and she fired up first time. Tried it a couple of times later in the day and now it fires up first time every time including this morning. So as you can imagine I am very pleased that for a couple of hours work, I have saved myself around £100.
