Hi folks, got myself a 2.7tdi 1998 mistral a few months ago and absolutely love it!
This forum has been a brilliant and helped me decide what mods to do etc :thumb2

I've been out offroading every weekend since owning the thing and can really see myself getting into it in a big way.

But before I go crazy and start spending all my money...
My question to you wonderful people is: how good are they?
Or how good can they be? Would it be worth getting a different vehicle that is more capable?
Would a land rover be better?

Any answer greatly appreciated.
-Rob :)

Well I have an old n reg 2.7 td Swb terrano I love it and think with the right mods could do a lot more than any Landy could,I wouldn't swap mine for all tge tea in china

Depends.

You are limited by the ifs, compaired to a landy or patrol swb, but to actually out do a Terrano u would need to chuck serious money at the landy to get anything much better out of the live axles than what a Terrano can achieve

But stick a lokka up front and you'll not be troubled by most things, it's just lack of articulation on extreme rock crawling.

Cool that's what I like to hear :D

Just goggled the Lokka, looks amazing! Anyone on here use one, and is there any where in the uk that's stock them?

Also is there any way to gain more articulation on the front?

Sorry for all the Q's, still pretty new to this.

Depends if you like comfort. I've been bouncing around on some very rocky lanes in my Maverick today and at times it was seriously unpleasant. The Landy folk looked far more comfortable (as I remember from my Rangie last year). Even stock though, these vehicles are exceedingly capable.

You can't really improve articulation much on the front. That's where the Land Rover's beam axles really deliver (like the one on the back of the Terrano).

Not sure what's going on in the profile pic, it might just be the way it's parked, but that front end looks a bit low. If it's crossaxled, that'd explain it but a tweak up might be useful.

Cheers for the replies :)

Yea I have raised the front a touch now, and bought a set of 31" mt's.
Want to raise the back end a bit more now.

Mainly wanted to know if a Landy had any major benefits over a nissan.
I think I've heard enough to keep it tho :thumb2

Anyone got a link to a uk supplier of that Lokka :D

Put it this way, I went here the other week, there was a bloke with a q plated landy, he had 33" simex/insa turbos, diff locks, scorpion/terrafirma bits all over it, I did everything he did bar one axle twister that was about 3ft deep of mud and he got stuck straight away and had to winch out of

My Terrano is stock chassis with 31" muds but my front is same height as rear that's all

I've thrown mine into all kinds of terrain, never let me down,, with the right tires, they'd be near enough unstoppable:cool:

Stinka that looks fun!

I'm a very happy chap then! Now to find me a lift kit!
Massive thanks for everyone's replies. :thumb2

remember to get it wet too!!:naughty

There's plenty more articulation available up front mate. You need to bin the ARB , shorten the bump stops, and rose joint the compresion rods :D
That's it , any more would need a live axle, and that's a very costly conversion.
Get a lokka and the T2 is a weapon, I know , I've taken out most competition :naughty
Checkout my photobucket link for the pics ;)

Bin arb yep.
Shorten bump stops yep.
rose joint the compresion rods?.. Come again?
Haha could you explain in simple man terms :thumb2

I'll get an have a look at your pics now :)

Never got that far mate but the best buy I reckon to make any T2 a proper beast :thumbs

if it is an off road motor just weld it up, me im gonna do the rear lsd as well as it is what it says limited, many times I see one rear spinning with the other stopped, it is only a light duty clutch after all, having said that, if yours is a road going motor then the above does not apply, and a lokker is the answer, Rick

Basically this lot allows the bottom arm to swing more easily as it's not being forced back to it's normal "parked" position by the huge bushes that are clamped through the chassis.

Maybe a discovery, But a defender is a much better offroader standard or doing similar mods like tyres.

I climbed a 1 meter step last week like it was a drive to the supermarket, LWB shogun on bigger tyres had to winch and a terrano on the same size tyres as me also had to winch.

Don't get me wrong the terrano is a good steed for what price they can be picked up for. But sooner or later if you get into serious offroading it's very limited unless you go as far as makeitfit. Even he wishes he put it on patrol axles. ;)

I also consider a Land Rover to have the edge, though they also benefit massively from a rear locker. Overall though (and having come VERY close recently to flogging the Mav and getting a Disco) the Maverick delivers in other areas, like build quality and it's not massively disadvantaged off road. Those front wishbones are the biggest weakness compared to a Landy I reckon, as they're always lower than the centre of the wheel.
