hello me again i have been given a starter for terrano 2 27tdi i need to test it but not on the car how do i go about doing this im sire some clever mech on here knows , up to now i have connecteed to spare battery on jump leads connected the earth to the starter body and live touched to the starter connnector and it spins the starter, if i touch the live to the extra piece on the side of the starter (not sure what its called ) the barrel thats on the side with the connections on it ,,,, the cog in the middle of the starter jumps out and pops back in .
with my vague description can anyone shed some light on wether this is a good one or not ?? many thanks for your patience:thumbs

are you sure ?
im not questioning your knowledge its just my description of events if i ve done all i said if you can work that out with my lack of mechanical knowledge well it will work on a vehicle ??

the technical bit on sides the solenoid it throws the dog gear out to engage on flywheel ring gear, the turning spins the flywheel, turning engine over and hopefully starting it! only problem is it has to be a nissan fit or bolt holes even dog gear etc might not fit properly!

yup, that works. when the cog pops out, thats because you have touched the solenoid, which is the wire that sends the cog out to start the engine

I think as well, to be sure it will actually work on a vehicle, is to see how strong that starter is. Usually you have to clamp it down, otherwise it will bounce away! If all is well, the cog will pop out strong, quick, and it should turn.

they usualy clog with nasty clutch dust stopping little cog/dog gear fying out, this may be asbestos and usual fix is wire brush so mask up or breathe in cacerous dust!

This type of motor should spin very fast off load aprox 10,000rpm so don't leave it spinning too long, that's one of the reasons the case is so strong incase it fly apart
inside. Only real test is on load.
