Hi all, as above, I'm uncertain to whether I have interpreted the down load properly and don't want to risk damage for sake of not looking daft, cheers, Mark :thumb2

You're not doing valve clearances are you? Brave Man
I'm sure it was my messing with those that caused the demise of my Maverick engine

Sure am, quite simple really bud, just need to make sure I get TDC right for pot one, and then number four, rest is in briggies download manual, tells you which ones to do :thumb2

Gonna put cover back on for now 'n clean mini filter in banjo on fuel pump, can you tell I'm bored :D

you do not need TDC for checking valve clearances, just watch the valve close then turn engine further quarter turn, Rick

Valve clearances on modern engines.

In the bad old days when headgaskets failed regularly and rocker gear used to wear badly (probably lack of oil on start up) I frequently had to adjust tappets but I have not done so in the last 20 years or so. Last time was on a FWD Cavalier 1300 ohc that had weird adjusters in the cam followers as I recall. Had to do them as headgasket had blown and had to replace a couple of cam followers that had started to "pick up" on the hardened surface.

I am a great believer in the old adage if you can hear your tappets you know the valves are closing OK so leave them alone.

its to make sure they have a gap and allow for expansion and to allow the valve timing is correct.

Bloody 'ell that's proper gunked up, is that with using veg oil or summat?

First time the car had ever been run on it so hopefully all the crap has now been dragged back through, last time I was in the tank it seemed to be pretty spotless :naughty

What are the issues with poorly adjusted valves clearances Panelbeater

So why adjust them at all?, is it solely to reduce noise?

Over time you get wear in the valve gear & with the 2.7 engine being OHV like the old for cross flow engines etc they need a little adjustment from time to time, if the gaps are to large then the valves don't open up as much as they should be which can lead to a tiny drop in performance but the same can be said if the gaps are to small which stops the valves from fully closing & sealing the chamber:augie IIRC Nissan recommend checking them at 50K then every 3-4 years after that but would have to check the service charts to confirm it

Cool, I get it now, I'm gonna leave it till next week now 'cos they're not too bad but can still hear them, off to find a few easy lanes instead tmoro :) been bloody cold today!!
