read the sticker on the sun visor Twintin. :augie:augie:augie:thumbs
lock the hubs in and remove rings so they stay locked in . but still drive in 2wd

effectivly making your auto hubs manuals

simples :thumbs

am i right in thinking that when i take them apart all i have to do is turn the inner spline? or is it a bit more involved than that? basically i was just gonna take the brake and springs out

well ideally you need them working to engage then remove the rings and they stay locked in ...

but if you dont have the rings working then yes i think you can turn the centre bit with a large set of grips

just make sure they are engaged test that by trying to turn the drive shaft .

if its in 2wd on the gear stick and you can turn the shafts . hubs engaged
if you cant . then hubs are engaged

Tintin my point was, permanently driving in 4WD is really bad news - the sun visor instructions tell you to ONLY engage 4WD in slippery conditions.

I'm not getting that Colin...? For Tintins benefit (and mine) if you do this mod, whats operating that wouldn't normally be, front diff, driveshafts etc..? - and whats different when you are in 2WD and then 4WD, compared to properly working auto hubs?:nenau

wouldnt it only be 4wd when 4h was selected. When in 2h it would just be rotating the shafts?

and dif . but yes its still in 2wd till you select 4wd

i think the 3 litre t2 is like this as standard with no hubs at all

terra knows more i think

yep. but theres the drag on the dif shafts ect..

Willow leaves her manual hubs engages when shes dashing about on her land.. only takes the off when on the road " i think " any ways

you were right then - go to the top of the class LOL

Actually I think its just the later ones that hav fixed drive flanges.

Don't worry about the using copper grease thing in the download personally I think that's wrong. The download was done by someone who broke his a few times and went to manuals, I use ordinary grease and have never broken mine - make your own mind up.

As has been said the rings shouldn't quite go all the way inside each other, if they go all the way they are too worn.

Having messed around with these a bit to get my head around tem, I am convinced that apart from wear the main reason for failures and breakages is people being clumsy with them. Either engage 4H on the move at low speed or if stopped when engaging 4H or 4L then bring the clutch up carefully first time to engage drive and lock the hubs in. The damage is dne when people get stuck, bang it in 4wd and then give it great guns to get out - at that point the sudden impact breaks the rings. Once locked in they serve no purpose until you dissengage the hubs again.

To answer one of the early question no don't jack up the front and and engage drive, you will drive straight off the jack. These trucks have no centre diff so drive to the rear will remain.

Best way to check that its all working IMHO is to get underneath with it in 2wd and turn the front prop. This should then turn the front diff and driveshafts and lock each hub in, if you can continue to turn the propshaft something is wrong - see which side it is. If all that checks out reverse up to dissengage the hubs and then put it in 4wd either high or low and get under again and try turning the propshaft again - if you can't the transfere box is engaging correctly.

At the rear if it feels like drive is swapping from side to side then your LSD isn't working properly or at least not well, it should pretty much lock solid in snow etc and drive should go to each wheel. First port of call with these is always to change the rear diff oil - it MUST be an oil suitabel for LSDs, correct Nissan spec is 80w/90 API GL5 LS

i have followed the download and cleaned both hubs the rings were undamaged but have started to sit inside each other i used normal lithium grease to reassemble and my 4wd is working now but will need to change the rings at some point.
when i got stuck in the snow before the 4wd was working it does seem to change drive from one wheel to the other at the rear so will change the rear diff oil for the proper stuff and see if that sorts it though i havn,t got stuck since cleaning the hubs.:bow

that sounds like the LSD trying to find some grip, so working well.. to me any ways

hi again guys i final stripped it down but have no idea how to wind the gear out enough to locate in the hub. Any advice?

"Lads, I may regret saying this, put I'm putting a months money on the T2 being free-wheeling hubs until its demise in 2006. It never had 'fixed hubs'.

I can't speak for the 3.0 but I don't believe the truck was re-engineered when that lump was dropped in.......happy to be proven wrong."
