hi all
over the last few days i've got stuck a few times in the slush and ice:doh where mi mates arent having problems(shogun:(,disco:(,frontera:() getting up the hill to the father in laws is a no no,i never had any trouble in the disco:confused: i used to have.
the front wheels dont seem to have any drive to them in any setting and the back wheels take it in turns spinning so when i get stuck it seems like i,m only getting drive to 1 wheel.
i have auto hubs which both looked in good order when i had them off to tighten the bearings a few weeks ago.
so if i put it in 4wd park up and jack the front of the mav up i shouldn't be able to spin the wheels if 4wd is working or am i barking up the wrong tree.

Is the light on the dash indicating 4wd is engaged coming on.

hi
yes the light comes on and goes off as it should also when i take it out of 4wd and reverse back i cant hear a click either even if i reverse 100 yards

sounds to me as you auto hubs are bust. theres a download on how to service them.

Hearing the click is a bit of an urban myth; I've had three trucks and never heard a noise.

Sounds like your LSD is doing its job OK if you still have drive with one wheel spinning.

I'll put my money on the brake rings one one or both sides being faulty. Check out the many threads on this subject.

I wouldn't know enought to say anything definite but zippy656 seems to have a point. There does seem to be something wrong. My experience is that if you have 4wd on, especially 4wd low, you will definately know its on. You can hear and feel the tyres almost digging especially if you are on gravel. There is a fairly powerful 4wd low on the T2's anyway and you should definately feel the drag especially when trying to turn on tarmac.

just read the download and noticed that copper grease is used in mine when i had them off was normal bearing grease and it was jam packed full of it could this be the problem if i get time tomorrow i'll strip the hubs down clean and re-assemble will post how i get on

you should have drive to both back wheels .

also put it in 2wd and turn the front drive shafts they should lock in if not the auto hubs are not right and need looking at

hi
this morn i've taken off thfe hub and cleaned it up. everything looks ok like the pic in the download section except i have an extra few pieces. between the bearing ring and the inner hub body there is a flat washer and i have sat on top of everything a spring and i think the brake ring is this right.
while the hub is off if i put the mav into 4wd should i see somthing moving on the axle where the hub was?

they are the bits but theyare not named that.

the break ring is the 2 rings that dont fit inside each other so act like a clutch and engage the hubs..... hard to explain

took me ages to work it out

looks like i,ll be in 2wd till i can afford some hubs then :(

new rings bout 50 quid see tezza he just bought some. if not get some from breakers simples

i think you will find the brake rings do fit inside each other, in the down load there is a minimum of 15.4mm wear on the thickness of the brake rings, and the springs wear aswell mine are very week but they are only £3.12 each plus vat. :thumbs

have a look here courtesy of jims terrano :clap

look to left and find auto hubs and click it, and scroll down, shows rings inside each other :doh

they dont tezzer they are close but dont quite fit, thats how it works
if they do fit inside one another they wont work

i spent a whole day trying to get mine to fit only for terra to explain they dont .

maybe terra can explain better . he is the best at explaining stuff and how it works ,

Got one new brake ring here in a bag. Plus 2 free wheeling hubs, But i would say it will be the ring There are two little luggs on the ring and they snap off, There for no 4 wheel drive, Give me a shout on here, There 4 sale no good on my 55 plate, And will be cheaper than nissan :thumbs

just read on another forum about removing the hub brake completeley and winding the hub spline out to leave the front wheels permanantley locked. Has anybody done this or have any thoughts as this could be a super cheap, ie free way of fixing it until i can afford new hubs? :D
