Horn not working

Tried to use my horn today and was greeted with silence. Looks like I've found a new job for Saturday morning now

Any tips as to where to start looking first please to restore noise?

Dodgy connections, fuse or relay maybe? In the same boat myself, taken to winding the window down and slapping the door when trying to get through Edinburgh Festival crowds, bit like farmers getting through a load of sheep! Mostly get away with revving the engine though, it's not exactly a quite bus

Ha I've got the same problem with my Celica, fitting a new one on Saturday, old horn totally dead. Checked connection etc, relay in the horn is working but no noise. try giving it a tap with a hammer, sometimes works

Could be dirty connections on the horn, mine did the same thing, but I fitted air horns:augie

That was my first thought, but I was dismayed to see that on the Mk1 T2's the horn is hard to get at - not sure, but it looked like I had to get the bumper out of the way as mine is down near the passenger headlight.

Gave up at that point as I know when the bumper comes off, I'll have a whole pile of bodywork to fix up!

try giving it a tap with a hammer, sometimes works

Great bit of technical fault finding there....:lol:lol

To do the job properly and systematically, start hitting at the back lower right hand corner, and keep going round the car in a clockwise direction (Unless you are Ryan, then go anticlockwise), getting slightly higher each time, until you get up to the roof. Try to avoid the windows, but if when getting to the last corner, it has not fixed it, then start on the windows as well. Finally, when it still does not work, one large bang in the middle of the roof with fix everything... :lol:augie

On my T2 (1999), you can get to the horns (there are 2, one each side) by removing the grill, and reaching down. They are fitted with captive nuts, so not to bad. May be different on the Mk1 though.

Same as my 95 Mav Mk I Twin horns too, so if twin horns, it is unlikely it will be the horns, there is a fuse, a relay to look at first.

It could be a faulty connection in the steering wheel, but if yours has an air bag, best struggle with that as a last resort.

There is also a lump of metal in the steering wheel that sometimes comes loose, this is probably to reduce vibrations, when this happens, most members remove it, but if left loose, can damage any wiring in the wheel, so bear that in mind too.

On the relay base, it shouldn't be too difficult to test if the supply to the coil of the relay is energised when the horn button is pressed. But if you are saying what to this statement, then you might want to ask a friend. Something I would do, before I started to strip the steering wheel with an air bag.

I guess some members would advise how to do this, but I have no experience of this.

I fitted new horns to mine as the old ones were so feeble, much louder now :thumb2

Simple fix, turned out to be the connections on the horn itself. All sorted, thanks for the tips

Well looking at the total thread, poor connections were mentioned immediately, but in all fairness Ryan suggested the connections on the horn, within an hour of your first posting.

I have done similiar today but not quite the same outcome....my little girl was sat in car while i was changing air filter housing, all of a sudden i though the QE2 was coming at me, the donut who i got it off had stuck 2 blooming great air horns under the front grille
