Hi from newbie in Cambridgeshire

Hi all. Just joined. I’ve Had a 2005 Patrol 3.0 auto for around a year now. All original. Loving the truck, even if it is brown. Fabled speed wobble recently getting worse so I’ll be hunting around the forum for any recommends of a good mechanic near to st Neots, Huntington or Cambridge who understands these vehicles. My usual mechanic fine for most stuff but doesn’t seem interested in bottoming this out. Cheers.

I know you have said new tyres and balanced but sounds like maybe one of the weights may have fallen off. It maybe your cheapest option to get that checked again before looking any deeper into it. Then we get down to wheel bearings may need greasing and tightening. Can you feel any movement if you grab the top of the wheel and shove it backward and forwards?

Sound advice. I did get a failed valve replaced a little while ago so could be a weight dropped or bad job balancing that wheel. I’ll get them checked. Can’t detect any movement aside from the car moving on the tyres when rock the wheels sideways.

Just get the 2 fronts checked. If you can't feel any movement bearing should be ok but just to double check if you have a Jack lift the wheel off the ground and do it again these are heavy motors. The next is your rubber bushes, but I would check the balance first.

Hi and welcome, think you need to check the top and bottom swivel bearings on your Patrol, if they have play then remove shims if there till play goes, if not renew the taper roller bearings, but you might need to get some shims to adjust, Rick

Thanks for the welcomes and tips. Will get balances checked next weekend and move from there if necessary. Strangely after horrid shakes this morning for a mile or two it settled quite a lot while on a longish run to pick up a trailer. Anyway, will get them checked.

Sounds like it could have been a build up of mud in one spot of the wheel which has now fallen off which caused the inbalance.

There's a number of factors that can cause/contribute to the Trol speed wobbles and this is a good list to work through...

1. Get a good balance, preferably on vehicle.

2. Wheel bearings, make sure they are tight.

3. Panhard Bushings.

4. Swivel Hub rebuild (remove shims first as a check, wobble goes with no shims then it needs new bearings).

5. Replace drag link / tie rod ends.

6. Shock bushings, or new shocks if had some punishment.

7. Steering box overhaul.

There's a school of thought that in making the handling more road friendly Nissan did something that makes the Y61/GU's more susceptible to wheel shimmy than the Y60/GQ's :nenau

If you get the proper death wobbles (steering wheel thrown out your hand they're so bad) that's a sign there's a suspension component flogged out, usually bushes.

Running larger than standard tyres can sometimes cause it too, fitting a return-to-centre steering damper can fix that.
