Hi,Having just purchaced a 1999 tdi TERRANO 7 seater i need your help.
Drove around yesterday great,Today tried to start it...nothing,there's plenty of power and the ign lights are on,the mil light is on steady, done the accessing codes from this site and it comes up 55 so good !
Noticed the small red alarm light on drivers dash is not on/working ,so is that something to do with it?so i'm just getting a click from around near the fusebox when i turn ignition key.
Do i need to take to NISSAN or can it be done by myself or electrician?GIVE ME A CLUE,suppose to be driving it over to Bulgaria within the week. :(

Hi Barny and welcome,

I know it’s a silly question but are you using the correct key, it should have a little red chip in the end.

Does the engine turn over?

Infamous dicky ignition switch?

try turning it round to the start position very slowly and gentley..

tim

Thanks for the replies,i'm waiting patiently for ideas...
Yes i have 1 single key with a small red rectangle at the metal end, nissan on one side of plastic and NATS on other side.
The key turns but just clicks, doesn't turn engine over/use starter. :(

Tried turning slowly, tried wiggling, tried pressure on it even done the okey cokey around the bloody thing but nothing.... 8O

Barny,

Does the alarm red LED flash when the key is out of the ignition?

Have you checked the battery terminal/lead connection on positive side ,sometimes they break.

no alarm led red light is not working for some reason and the battery leads are good with good terminals :(

I had this on my old red Mav, had to call the RAC out and it took him about 15 mins to sort it. There is a couple of relays hidden between the battery and the inner wing. If you slacken the battery fixing brackets you can get at them. Clean all the connections as they corrode over time and as you cant see them they never get any maintenance.

Good luck.

check all the main wires from the battery, even a small wire can disable the whole electric system... did on mine.
look very closely a small break might not be obvious

a small tester with a 12v bulb is very handy when this happens ... you can make one from old car bits . you need a 12 volt bulb and a bulb holder 2 lengths of wire, connect a live wire to live on the bulb holder and the earth... hey presto a cheep current tester,

it take 5 mins to make and will save you hours and loads of money

Ok Thanks everyone,i shall try and post back if they work or not.

OK,Thanks everyone, tried everything mentioned but with no luck,on a last measure i thought mmmmmm give the starter a knock !so my Mrs turned the key and i give it a sharp knock with a metal bar and presto, she burst into life......looks like the STARTER MOTOR was stuck/sticking so when i have time i need to take off and clean/vaseline,grease and refit and hopefully that will be it.

starter motor

good to hear youve got to the source of your problem.well worth the tenner you spent to join.this site has saved me a fortune over the past year

Hello Barny,
Dont forget to check the connections before taking it off as sometimes these can work loose or even have broken wires.

Mav.
