well just spoke to engineer, pistons due monday,

just as well doing all as he has found another one
cracked.

perhaps 10 years service for what was a new design
of engine aint too bad.

hopefully back on road wednesday.

going to have a nosey on monday, get some pix.

seen 4 new shiney pots in place today,

appears cracked tally is now 3, so guess
was blessing in disguise doing the hg and
having an engineer with good eyes.

Glad you did not come all the way down here now, ay, would have been a more expensive job in the end with traveling and all, regards Rick

Cheers Rick, didnt want to say thought same. 2 day job?? would have been looking for a job by now lol. another time eh, your time and thought very much appreciated and of course offer of hospitality/accomodation.

Glad your sorted:thumb2 had a feeling you had a grenade when you first started getting the overheating problems:eek:

Thats why I got a 2.8 TD6, knew about the early 3.0ltr problems and at the time couldn't afford a later 3.0ltr:nenau.

:)

Likewise glad you got it all sorted and are now back on the road, Rick

thanks mate, yep was always my concern, but it had got this far seemingly.

wouldnt have another but still want this one if makes sense, think another
troll would have to be another engine, either yours or one of the older ones
or even big petrol 6s with lpg. the car is perfect, and guess the zd is too
on a good day, its just when it isnt.......

Just like the Navara's YD25 then!

Nice when they are going , but the cost cutters cut too much of the originally designed quality out leaving a unit that -will- grenade on you unless 2 simples remedies are made!

I'd have another Troll in a minute and I will probably get one when the time comes:augie the RD28ETI has its own problems eg cylinderhead cracks, but you get that with loads of engines.

I've read loads about bullet proofing the 3.0ltr engines, like blocking the EGR, fitting a catch can and adjusting the variable vane turbo so it doesn't over boost. Also read that the MAF can cause the engine to grenade, yes and fitting an EGT so you don't melt the pistons.

I was well impressed by Tubbs 3.0ltr last year when we were towing the vans to Croatia. No black soot what so ever and it pulled like a train, left my 2.8 in its dust and his van was 250kgs heavier than mine, it also used less diesel, at least £10 on every fill up.
All that said I love the big lazy lump that is the 2.8 TD6, straight 6 cylinder that is so smooth.:clap

towing performance update of rebuilt zd engine

well been out with caravan, ok pretty flat run on cool days
sheffield to nearly cleethorpes, but was getting 60-65 mph
on speedo and temp gauge was comfy just under middle
of gauge there and back, at worst went just past half on
outbound friday night on a grade on m18, yet today on the
much longer grade other way from a1m upto almost j1 m18
never moved.

in fact was held back my roadworks and a 50 restriction til
got to a1m then accelerated up bank cresting it at 65 and
wasnt trying , and gauge was normal under half position so
happy ihave cracked it.

on way out got one turbo boost check light almost as left home
yet got home today without it coming on.

happy to go anywhere now, just pity price of fuel might limit us!

Glad its running cooler:thumb2

Need to get a boost gauge and see if it is really overboosting, because if it is it won't be doing it any good:eek:

Alan, I'm interested but fear its way over my head, think I'd need more than a phone
a friend, reckon you best get kettle on....
