ok...*sigh*...was going to use the Mav this evening to take our lass and her mate down into town. Car started fine (still having the usual odd idle thing) and off we went up round the dirt track. Our lass couldnt get her seatbelt to buckle, and I ended up stalling. restarted, off we went a few hundred yard to house of her mate, noticed MIL ligh ton. ARRGGHHH. very annoyed, so drove back home and got the mazda. Just re read the codes and its code 18 again. now this code has appeared (and dissapeared) about three times now before or after a major repair, so im inclined to believe its a true fault given the odd idle issues (and probably other engine issues i havent realised).

I gotta say, im pee'd off now, its nothing, i say NOTHING but trouble really, but im prepared to fix this one last issue and if that doesnt do it, im getting rid.

ok, so its code 18, which translates :

Fuel quantity adjuster/position sensor-malfunction. probably cause could be: wiring, supply voltage, fuel quantity adjuster/position sensor, ecm, fuel injection pump.

ok, please help, where do i start?

i feel right down now to be honest because i really want this truck right.

hope you can help guys!!

im gutted for you mate , hope you get it sorted :thumb2

sounds like its broken. i believe the fault code that crops up for that is fuc/k3/d.

but on a serious note, i am sorry to hear this as i know all to well how frustrating it is when cars break. it dont matter whether you spend £300 or £30000000, all cars are crap and will break eventually. dont give up hope.

im not expert ( far from it ) , but a common part and sympton keeps cropping up here , with regard to your idling issue to and the code 18 which mentions fuel pump ..... see my point clive ? ...... i hope its that simple , but like i said im not a expert .

I know. my feeling is that it is simply the fuel pump. but at the moment, i cant be 100% certain. cars only got 116k miles on it, and ive only put 2k on it since buying it well over a year ago :(

code 18 has occured about three times, and always cleared after a major repair such as the No1 injector, ckp sensor and wiring. now its back, im certian theres an issue with that sensor, but as far as I know, its part of the friggin pump.

youre right Si, this is why i only buy cheap cars (that I attempt to fix myself) because i know i can spend thousands on a used car, and STILL end up with the same issues :(

I wish this car was as simple as my old Fourtrak.

I dont believe its a false economy, i mean, i love the truck, and ive invested a fair bit so far but it hasnt broke the bank. if its now the fuel pump, then apart from the clutch thats about as major as it gets.

im just uncertain. cars been driving ok so far, i cant say faultles because ive had this idling thing a while, and for all i know, im lacking a lot of power (certinaly feels a little underpowered but i am not sure)

My fuel pump gave up at 92k with no warning.

now...you say gave up? in what way? mines still running you see, only issue i get now is the idle and POSSIBLY loss of power but its hard to tell. no smoke issues when driving, just the odd puff of black at standstill...could it be mine is on its way out perhaps>?

where can I get a new one, and is it something i can do myself, or is it garage time? :(

Is your pump fly by wire? if it is, even if you purchased a brand new pump, it would have to go on the Nissan computer to set it up, my feeling is to put it on the diagnostic now and try and find the real problem, but have had no dealings with the Nissan set up, I had a late Range Rover that had to have a new pump and the computer set up was ace, expensive, but had to be done, Rick

Gave up as in no warning then loads of smoke and undriveable. Had it lifted to the garage and a new pump fitted .I was told the old pump had disintigrated inside.

its fly by wire system, surely i dont have to take it to Nissan!?

Fly by wire has to be set up electronicaly and you need a dedicated computer to do that, there may be non Nissan guys out there that can do this I do not know, that is where this club comes in, there must be a member that has some info on this, in the US I have read that remapping the brain is regular thing, but I am not sure this is done on your own "brain" but rather a remapped substitute is used, Rick

bloody hell...seems a far worse problem than i thought, but there must be other guys that have had pump replaced, can anyone tell me what they had to do please??

actually, i still havent checked the wires yet etc to the pump...

That is really the point, you do not know what the problem is yet, it could just be a bad earth somewhere, just got to keep looking, Rick

ok, went out into the rain and had a look. cant see any issues with the pump, although it IS hard to see down there! all plugs are plugged in, and i traced back to the loom near the intercooler, and again the plugs all seem fine and clean.

I also checked the main negative battery lead. on mine, the wire runs from a grounding point on the engine block, under the pwoer steering bottle bracket to the battery-so very tight. i wanted to move it so it went round, but found that under the coolant bottle, its joined...see here:

is that right??

I also took some video to try show you how it runs, you can just tell the idle thing i am on about...but not sure if i can get that uploaded yet, im at a loss right now. MIL light is NOT lit at the moment, but i suppose i need to take it for a short drive after clearing the codes to see if it comes back...

ok, got the video uploaded. it does show the idle thing if you watch just before i rev it up twice. infact, all along in the video its doing it. It seemed worse since moving some of the ground wires to their own points on the block (the negative battery wire plus a couple of the smaller ones).

you can see the loom where the sensors are for the pump, the egr, the solenoids etc...

have you checked the fuel lines between the injectors they break down and give issues. mine have and similar symptoms . my mill light comes on occasionally but when i aply the brake it goes out... not really bothering my

not sure, that shows the fuel pump being in the boot area, i thought the issue was fuel injection pump, isnt that the part below the power steering pump?
