Hi Guy's
Got another problem,it's been difficult to start for some time but as got worse,(new glow plugs fitted)
turns over in the morning fast, no problem with the starter or battery it will start once running a little lumpy for a few seconds them levels out after the smoke as cleared, but the other day when driving across the forest came to a t junction and it stalled and was turning over for quite some time before firing up,(great battery the varta) found a diesel leak to the fuel line a long the chassie tightened the jubilee clip drained the fuel filter up pumped up the pressure all good, took it out saturday morning it started after turning over for a long time but this time no power and stalling no engine management light on and pressure at the fuel filter, inline injector pump i've removed the little mesh filter what could be causing the stalling never had this before where do i start looking/testing

What engine is it? And year? Essential info to help with ideas.
Any signs of a leaking head gasket? Have you every run it on any cheap/bad fuel? Veg Oil?

What colour was the smoke at start up?

Sounds to me like the diesel pipes are letting in air. Rusted pipes can cause all kinds of problems. Personally if you've had diesel leaking I'd be replacing both lines front to back, yes even the return as for some reason that too causes running issues or did with mine. You can replace with cunnifer like Banshee but most people use rubber fuel grade.

It's also been known that cheap fuel filters don't seal to the housing correctly and cause air to be sucked into the fuel supply.

I've had the fuel filter seal problem, was taking longer to start and often died when I put my foot down, scared the wotsit out of me so I was very relieved when it turned out to be filter :thumb2

I too had this problem soon after fitting a cheap fuel filter, white smoke everywhere.
So with my heart pounding thinking I had blown the motor, I went straight to the Nissan dealer, and bought a Nissan original, got home all sorted in 5 minutes. phew.... :augie

I bought the last filter from Euro car parts, and that has been fine. :thumb2
There are good ones out there, but just a few naff ones too.

fitted a new fuel filter,i disconnected a number of plugs running back to the glow plug timer relay and found a lot of corrosion/ creamy coloured paste never seen that before, i also took the glow plugs out connected them back on to the busbar ran a length of earth cable back to the battery test them and they are working i.e. all glowing, does anyone know the overall length of the glow plugs these ones measure 81mm end to end, i have a 1998 2.7td intercooler the ones i have are NGK's from Eurocar parts just in case they supplied the wrong ones
thanks

Never liked ngk so I would change them anyway, also I believe they make a lot with ceramic tips which if they are definitely change them as they can shatter as others have proven.

creamy paste is a a grease based lubricante to keep connection clean have had it on all my terranos did you not check length with the old ones you took out:thumb2

The 2.7td non intercooler version have one type of plug, the 2.7 tdi intercooler have a different plug.

Overall the td version is cheaper than the tdi version, which might help.
I assume 3 litre patrol engine is totally different,
I use ngk, not had a problem as yet.. When they go they simply split, look metal to me. I could be lucky though, unless there are fakes out there.

Tip;
When removing glow plugs, soak thread with Wd40 say overnight, but use a "T" bar and use an even rotation, if you use a wrench you can put side pressure ie put a bending moment on the plug, and this increases the chances of shearing the plug in the head.:doh

Hmmm t bar, I good advice, don't believe I have any of those, I shall remedy that tomorrow with a trip to my favourite shop :D:D:lol

will be putting it back together tomorrow,no i have never seen the paste before, heat shrink would de a better job

I have the white paste on some of my connections, I think it could be white lithium grease :nenau

I usually spray wd40 or similar in them, then when connected spray aerosol wax-oyl on the outside to water proof them for when I'm wading.

Just a point of note, the heads on a TDi are different between Bosch and Zexel as the injectors are very different but not had a chance to compare the glow plugs so as said just a point of note, Rick

built it back up today, have got diesel under pressure to the bango on the pump, and have tried bleeding at the injectors but it still will not start,it's an in line pump do the stop start solenoid's give much trouble,it turns over no problem when i give it a squirt of easy start it fires up then stalls so no diesel to injectors i'm thinking??

Maybe I have missed something, are we talking Terrano here or VW as you say "inline pump" but the T2 is rotary, Rick
