HI Guys,

I am just trying to get organised so that I can finally get my Maverick repaired and back on the road, been FAR too long. Anyway, I am looking at the MOT failure sheet for the parts I need, but the wording doesnt tally up with what to buy SO, can someone just help me understand the parts I need??

1:-
Nearside and offside front shock absorber has an excessively worn bush

the rest is three spots of welding, although I am not so sure about one part but we will see, and the handbrake needs adjusting, they reckon 15% efficiency, buti am not so sure as it locks the brakes just fine, but anyway....

no not on a retest, if you want to bodge the sills there are ways of doing it , but i dont recommend it though, if it's rotten, it's weak and needs a proper repair, ie, cut out rust and weld new plate on by welding all the way round plate, some people say it wont fail because the vehicle has a seperate chassis, but it can be near a structeral point and it can fail, worth doing properly the first time.:thumbs

Hi Clivvy

The front shocker bushes do not come seperate from the shocks, so you'll need full shocks for the front.

The front ARBL is what Milners describe as "Suspension Anti Roll Link Front".

You need to clarify with the tester exactly what part he meant by steering Idler, when he mentions Ball Joint I wonder if he means a link arm that fastens to the idler via a ball joint?

Terranus may have some shock bushes around from his recent supplies:augie
If not it only needs a rubber bush/cotton reels. Try the scrappy, it's only a bolt to undo
AND ask the bloody examiner what he means, you've paid him enough.:thumbs

well, to be honest I am going to get a second opinion now. Wether I like it or not, I hav eto pay a full fee for a new MOT, so might as well take it down the local garage and get them to do it, see what they say and get some proper details from them. I did ask my mech to clarify, but he wasnt very clear grrrr!!! He did explain though that it was the whole steering arm, the relay rod. He did say it was just the suspension bushes, they look seperate to me?? as for the anti roll links, I can see that its just the links, I can see where they have scratched and scraped them...

See what I mean it's all too wishy washy:augie Suspension bushes need not be shock bushes, and steering arm is not the big rod bit?
If you're going to do it again wait there with the man and ask him while he's at it.
Then you'll see what he means with a bit of luck.

mot station should have a viewing area for you to watch them testing it. i always watch them test my cars and ask them while its up on the ramps how things are looking so far and every time if theres a fail the tester will say "its this here" and show me exactly what the prob is. also worth reading the fail sheet as soon as you are given it while the testers there to clear up any grey areas while its fresh in his mind as in my experience they usualy dont know the proper names of the parts they are failing your car on.

well, went down to my very local garage earlier, and had a word. No help there, sounds like their prices are as high as my previous mechanics, all they talked about was the possibility of replacing the whole sill and so on!

so now I am back to square one, and feeling pretty glum. All I needed was for soemone to say wack soem plating on the sills, job done, £70. The welding is the worst part.

I am going to have to weigh it up again, but I dont think I am strong enough (physically!) to replace the shockers and links, as in i might not be able to loosen the bolts and so on! (the guy at the garage reckons that its most likely the entire shock i need if it says the bush is worn??)



options are:sell it as it is, but i need £600 at least fot it. Have it fixed bit by bit-and possibly loose out on the tax that is currently on it, or find soemwhere damn cheap, and have it sorted-but thats the tricky part, I dont know anyone!

have you looked in your local paper or thompson local for a local mobile mechanic they are usualy pretty cheap as they have fewer overheads. i had a terrano fail needing welding done to the rear seatbelt mount everywhere wanted £150 + to fix but the mobile mechanic charged me £70, so might be worth a try.

well, thats exactly what I need!

I have tried to find a mobile mechanic, but I think i havent tried hard enough. I have listed the welding job on My Hammer, but will call some guys tomorrow, thanks for the kick!

well, thats crud. I just searched Yell, thompson and BT and I cant find a single Mobile Mechanic? I live in Huddersfield, so either the government is out to get me and is stopping all my searches from working, or there really are no mobile mechanics in Huddersfield!

I will try expanding my search...

Clivvy I refuse to believe you can't find a decent welder in Huddersfield mate, pull yer finger out LOL. And remember they will need to do a bit of fabrication cos you can't buy replacement sills.

Why not try an agricultural engineers? You might laugh but they turn their hands to all sorts in their line of business, at worst they might know someone who does what you need. Its always far better to go that route than Yellow Pages cos you end up working on recommendation.

Once you sort the welding the rest is a piece of cake...just get back here and we'll work through it with you. Droplinks are simple, as are shockers....probably best to replace the whole thing but not vital if theres no sign of leakage or bad rusting, just get the bushes from the scrapper as Makeitifit suggests...

I not saying I can spare much time but I'm happy to come up to yours with my nice long 1/2 square drive bar:thumbs That'll move most bolts:thumbs

If your just wanting to plate the sills how about buying a small mig and having a play with some scrap.

the city listings has loads of mobile mechanics on it, so going to try some of them. I have never used a mobiel mechanic, whats the usual way with these guys, do they come out to assess the job sort of free of charge?

If the mobile mech route doesnt work, i will try an agricultural engeer, loads of farms round here so bound to find one somewhere.

I appreciate the offers of help, i may call on you, but if i get the welding done, I might have to seriously consider doing as much of the rest myself as I can, its just like i say, i am a bit of a weekling!

guys, i REALLY appreciate your help and patience, sorry to drag this on its just in the past I have ended up in bad debt due to paying out and paying out for car repairs, and I dont want to go down that route again, so the help and suggestions is really appreciated!
