I just drained my gearbox, stuck to the drain plug mag apart from the usual stuff was a roller 0.168" long by 0.078" dia, dims in inches cos I dont have a metric mic, old eyes aint up to reading a vernier.:eek::eek:

Picture attached, the roller is in a small bag so the line on it is the bag sticking to the oil. I put it in a bag because of its small size, did not want to lose it. Picture was scanned at 600DPI

The mag on the drain plug has a bit missing, so hopefully this roller is left over from a not too well done rebuild, or the plug got dropped sometime in the last 17 years, :doh

OK panic mode, There was no noise from the box, gears change OK, change is a bit slow but I am new to stuff like this,

No noises of any sort from transmission under load or on overrun. In fact in pauper mode I often knock it into neutral & coast, apart from tyre noise almost silent running. I leave the engine running, tick over 750ish hot.

At 25p per mile [just worked it out, since I bought it 648 miles fuel burnt £160.09] I avoid using brakes when gravity & friction will slow me down when ever I can

Any ideas out there:bow:bow

Thanks for the tip about using a hose via the engine bay to get the oil in, that is the next task, watch this space.

Roller Bearing

If it is a bearing that has come out of the gearbox more will follow in next few hundred miles of that you can be sure then some serious noises.

You can tell if its a bearing as a Junior hacksaw blade will not cut into it due to the hardening and bearing steel specification.

Lets hope its left over debris from a previous strip down.

I'm hoping it is left over debris
At least i bought the mav from a dealer

Good thinking, this is my first 4x4 & first ever motor from a dealer

History

You could always write to last owner in the log book with an SAE. I did this with a Merc Estate I had and the bloke rang me and gave me a full history including why he had parted with it. - bought a camper and traded in his car & caravan in the deal.

good tips thanks, I spoke to the dealer, he politely looked at me as if to say, go forth & multiply.
I will write him a polite letter, copy to Consumer direct.

The box looks like it has not been disturbed for long time.

I will write to last registered owner

A dealer is obliged to give you a guarantee by law the minimum is a month, I think, but maybe 3 months, I'm not sure - but someone will know!

are the ends ground smooth or is one end rough, I think it is too short to be a roller from your box, Rick

Roller

Had a close look, looks slightly convex each end, definately not rough, & it is dead hard, blade would not touch it, I will try to get a better scan of it later.

Have a meeting in under an hour

Def looks like a needle roller

I found my digital vernier, I will measure it with it later too

I had a 30 day guarantee, got the mini filter done with that, Consumer direct mumbled something about a year & their web site suggests recourse if something shows up further down the line after the 30 days, I will look for the link later

Could it be the missing bit of magnet on the plug?? ( if it weren't so hard?)
as for "In fact in pauper mode I often knock it into neutral & coast"coasting uses fuel to keep the engine running. if you lift off in the ECU should stop throwing fuel into the engine therefore using less/none!!

Here is another possibility, the guy who last serviced the box, took the plug out and it picked up the roller from a dirty bench, he didn't wipe the plug and put it back in with the roller attached..:nenau

How could a roller escape from a bearing, without leaving other debris, eg part of the cage etc

Just imagine if that roller had got trapped between 2 gears... ouch..:doh
Something would have to break or bend.

The bit is certainly a roller not a broken bit of mag, I hope it was a sloppy fitter. There was a larger than expected amount of metal on the mag, mainly metal dust as usual plus the roller & a bit of swarf like you would expect on a drill bench or even a lathe bed, wish I had hung onto that now.:doh

I groped around inside the drain hole, there was nothing there I could feel, perhaps I will drain it again in a few weeks & put the endo snake up there & see a bit further than the length of a digit.

If I find another roller then panic mode will overcome me, watch this space.:banghead

whilst I have not stripped a T2 manual box, the size of that roller to me says it did not come from your box, Rick

I don't know about these things but the evidence presented from everyone who has commented points to the plug being taken out and put down on the floor or a work bench and picking up debris :thumb2
