Need Help fast!

I was driving home earlier and everything was running sweet as a nut and then out of the the blue i lost about 80% power and found it hard to get up to 30mph. it was like a trailer with 5 tonne in it was just hooked onto me while i was driving!!

there's no warning lights on the dash no strange smells or change in engine temp.

im pretty sure i have an inter-cooler and a turbo. could it be related?

as im working 50 miles away at the moment i really need it right for monday so i said id put it up on the forum to see has anyone had this problem before

HELP!!

MAF

unplug it, drive it to see if its the same, if so, its your MAF. Can you check what type you have, BOSCH or HITACHI, its located near the air filter box, wth a plug going into it....

what does it rev to?

sounds MAFy to me as well.

can try cleaning it if you have any contact cleaner.

DONT USE WD40, as its to oily.

Thanks for your replies, i unplugged the maf and it was still way down on power but i think there was a little improvement compared to when i was plugged in.

Its a bosch maf and it revs to 4 1/2 rpm when idling

no, dont rev it when idling....you have to drive it, MAF unplugged. If it drives the same-sluggish, then the maf is at fault. if its a bosh MAF, it could be faulty but you can try cleaning it. If its an HItachi, it will probably just need cleaning. The bosch ones are self cleaning, but the process if heating up the element starts to damage it when they are older, but they are cheap to replace.

get contact cleaner, spray it, allow it to dry, then try again driving it. this may get you home, so to speak, but if it does seem to be the MAF, consider buying a new one.

i drove it maf unplugged and was still down on power so i will try it with contact cleaner in the morning and try and source a new one during the week!

thanks again for the advice! much appreciated.

fingers crossed!! if its the MAF, at least its an easy fix, and the car will still drive, albeit slowly!

take a peek at your air filter too , see if its dirty

yeah it dosnt seem like a mechanical problem it feels like its electrical so at least it should be handy enough to fix (I hope!)
i will give the air filter a look too!

thanks guys

Dealer is the best place for the Bosch MAF (unusually!) :thumb2

my nissan dealer wanted £140 for bosch so i got mine of ebay from a shop £30 0r £40 quid but been in the terrano now for abot 6months no problem and i drove it back from blackpool with the maf ****ed got to taunton and remembered it could be the maf i thout it was turbo or something unpluged the maf and i could get 60mph before as soon as i hit a hill it was down to 35mph after was fine but when i put new maf in what adiff that made .

this morning i took out the maf and cleaned it to no avail, the power loss remained exactly the same. i think the maf is dead! so i have to order one from nissan or ford whichever one is cheaper tomorrow. :(

Ford is probably more expensive, they only get it from Nissan anyway! Ring round til you find one in stock, should be reasonably common at main dealers.....

Picked up a new MAF from a local auto-factors for €105 this morning.
Terrano is driving better than ever!! thanks for the advice and the rapid response!!

Well done that man! A bit over the odds as i think the Nissan price is around the £60-70 mark. But what the hell, job done!:)

As my sister-in-law always says "if a problem can be fixed with money then it isn't a problem":thumb2. Mind you, she is married to a millionaire :doh

That would certainly help!!
I priced one from the main Nissan dealer first and they said €370!! :doh so i said F**k Off!! Ive no idea where they came up with that price.
So I was quite happy to pay €105 in the end.
anyhow as you say, its sorted!! :thumb2
