After visiting the local garage today to have a new front exhaust pipe fitted, when I went to drive off I noticed a red warning light was still on, its next to the handbrake light, I think it is the one that tells you that the brake fluid level is low. I returned back to the garage and fair play to them they went through everthing that they could see to get the red light to go out, but all to no avail, Now, they took the side electrical connection off on the brake fluid reservoir and cleaned it they also checked the fluid which was full and pressed the plunger down, they also used a jumper wire across the 2 terminals on the connector and also checked the fuse box but still the red light would not go off, they did say that they didnt know whether there were relays involved and after speaking to you guys any info you may have they were willing to try, at present the light is still on and Ive finished up putting black tape over it to stop it from bowking me whilst driving,

Any body know what the fault may be as Im at a loss and although am still mad I do feel really that putting a new front pipe on shouldnt cause this, unless you know different.

Any help with this is gratefully accepted but please do not venture from the original issue as I will sort out with the garage after the problem has been solved Thanks in advance Monty

Is it the malfunction indicator light that is lighting? There is an instruction sheet in the downloads section that tells how to read the fault codes if its the malfunction indicator light that is on.

Does this apply to the TD version that I have ???????

is this no the break level warning ie low wear/restricted indicator meaning that the brake pad level is low or their is a blockage in the system
i had a light come on next to handbrake light and the pedal was slightly harder than normal

Check they have not messed with the parking/handbrake switch/wiring ... that could cause the light to remain on...

Thanks to all concerned so far, just to maybe clarify a few things, firstly it is the light to the right handside of the parking barake light, I am fairly sure its just for the low level brake fluid indicator,

The brakes are fine no need for pads as they aint got sensors fitted and were only done in June,

The light wasnt on when I went into the garage, BUT was on when I came out.

Thinking that the comment about the handbrake sensor-thingy is worth a look at, but where is this located ????

It really bugs me as it defernately WASNT ON before I went in, so I feel that Ive had one job done and another has been made for me to clear off the list and Im 40 quid lighter :doh :doh :doh

whats it say in the manual about it ?

it could have been something knocked off when they did the work or loosened by mistake

Hi Karl,
I aint got a manual for this car, I have just pm,d Briggie to see if he has a manual/ wiring diagram, I do think like you that theyve disturbed something BUT I had a look whilst it went back on the ramp and the front pipe goes down the nearside hugging the chassis rail and there dont seem to be them many wires on that side, being fair to them they did spend about a hr looking and probing but the BLOODY LIGHTS STILL ON.

As Ive said before it wasnt on before I went in but is on even now :( :( :(

Hi, am I right in thinking the red light, with the ( ! ) symbol, comes on if brake fluid is low, and at a guess until I check, it may come on if it thinks there is no vacuum in the brake sevo, either there is no pressure, or the switch/sensor is disconnected. But not certain, most other cars do this.

To check the servo, with engine off press brake several times, this will empty the servo.
Press lightly on the brake and as you start the engine the pedel should go down a little if its working.

Re fault codes, we don't have fault codes on the 2.7TD, so it's not that.
Hand brake light is seperate, and operated by a switch under the handbrake next to the adjuster.
Hope this helps,
Best regards, Rustic

Rustic yes yes you are right ref servo but all is fine with that and I am sure this light is for brake fluid level ONLY but have just looked at the manual sent by Briggie and I read it as on pg 81 that the brake fluid level and parking brake are on the same circuit which makes me think that the post about checking the handbrake parking switches underneath the motor is worth a look, but where is the handbrake switch, ???

my manual say brake fluid low

handbrake switch is normally under the handbrake and is just a little plunger switch

does the handbrake lght still function properly
