Hi to all. Just joined forum. Terrano mk2 2.7TD 05 plate
Had a bad leak on the power steering, removed sump plate and high pressure alloy piping had become porous and leaking (in the u frame area that bolts onto body o/side).
Kept topping up fluid, but was getting worse. Got hold of spare off breakers. Took off old piping and replaced. Was fine for a few days, then the replacement started leaking !!!, exactly the same place and got worse in 1 day. Obviously pressure weakened it.
Put back the original piping (slower leak) and time to rebuild other with reinforced piping and clip etc, however the long nut that screws into the steering box is pouring fluid. Seems thread may have gone ?? Darnt start the engine, as fluid will be propelled everywhere !!
Any ideas guys, as I have lost the will to live !! After hours fitting and refitting with 17mm spanner and very limited space.
Thanks very much. Mike

Sorry, meant to say PS fluid is seemingly leaking through the middle of the nut / tubing. Thanks

I have a Mk 1 breaking here not sure at the mo if they are the same will look am tomorrow, I am near Hastings if any good, Rick

Thanks Rick, but I'm probably going down the line of a reinforced piping and high pressure connections. Worried about the thread on the steering box though !!

would have thought that the thread on the union [nut ]is stripd b4 the thread inthe box??????roy:(

I got a box if you need one, Rick

Yeah, two union nuts from seperate cooling piping used now leaking, so must be the thread on the actual steering box chewing them up ??
Could I get it rethreaded??
Just incase, how much for steering box please ??
Thanks for your help guys

Upon closer inspection, Psf is leaking between metal pipe and union nut. Started the engine and Psf poured out. So in my mind must knackered union nut ?? No seeping from thread of steering box wall.

Silly boy, all you needed to have done was replace the leaking metal section with a length of hydraulic pipe and two jubilee clips.:)

Hmmm, would the jubilee clips hold that type of pressure ?
It's been a real pain. I'm wandering if a seal is missing of the end of the pipe that goes into the steering box, then nut tightens the pipe in place ?? :nenau

not that much pressure in it. fixed mine that way twice on two T2s and they've gone on and on and on......

Going to take the truck to local garage in morning, then do the pipe / jubilee clip jobbie.
Thanks Rick, will keep in mind, just incase !!
Thanks very much guys. Mike. :thumbs. :clap

pipe from your local hydraulics supplier...I paid a fiver for a metre length and two clips - but check as I can't remember if its 8 or 10mm internal bore you need.

Theres some debate about what that whole length of apparently spurious pipe is all about, bearing in mind it goes across to the passenger side and back again. Some say its for cooling but if so its not very professionally done LOL. I suspect its just a standard length of pipe that does for l/h and r/h drive without modification.

I need to do the same with mine, got quite a lot of corrosion under the car and power steering pipes are leaking and its getting worse. Been topping it up so far. Quote for new part was stupid! Local garage said to contact Pirtec to get a hose and just use clips. Do you know what bore it was?

Honestly cant remember, its 8 or 10mm....PM Daved, he knows.:thumb2

It's obviously a weak point as I've just had mine done on my 2004 2.7Tdi. Mine is a left hooker and the pipes go across the back side of the front member - steering box is LH side and pump / reservoir RH side . I have nowhere to work on mine so I took it to the dealer here in Reykjavik and they were as good as gold - told me genuine replacements were too expensive and they get a local firm to make them up. Cost me £43 for a whole new pipe assembly. They just did the pressure but then the return went a few days after and they replaced that one no charge as "they should have found it the first time" - cant ask fairer than that :thumbs
