Put truck in gear this morning and pulled away seemed to clunk and lose drive then regain drive then lose again. So put in neutral and then selected first and pulled away ok.About a mile down the road a thud like a speed bump sound and then horribly grunching noises, limped back home in 2nd and left on drive, got car out and have gone to work.Any idea's please, have always had a slight wine from gearbox but nothing major but have notice a top end engine type rattle for last few weeks. When got home selected reverse no probs and backed into drive. Will remove drain plug tomorrow to see if any metal comes out as oil was changed 4 months ago so should be clean.Done 133,000 3.0ltr di 2005. Manual. If gearbox , how much a recon one and how easy to remove please.

Eliminate the cheapest first...

It's not the top rubber gater under the gear lever that is putting it out of gear is it.

It doesn't sound like a clutch problem, if it's ok in some gears not the others, but don't eliminate that one yet. Clutches on the 3.0 are prone to failure than the lower powered 2.7's.

Have you tried putting the transfer box into 4 wd then low ratio 4wd, find some loose gravel or wet grass first. It could be slipping into neutral, but the transfer box is generally trouble free. Unless some linkages have not been aligned.

Have you had a new clutch recently?

The 2.7Td boxes were prone to whine, which was caused by poor lubrication to the front input shaft bearing, on these it is recommended to slightly over fill the box. I thought the later boxes were slightly better.

Also check gearbox mounting to crossmember. Mine collapsed :augie and it does cause the engine and gearbox to lean back but I wouldn't have thought back far enough to stop 2nd and 4th.

Thanks guys will have a look tomorrow, clutch was fitted approx 15,000 miles ago buy main dealer. Haven't tried any other gears just left it in 2nd and drove home slowly, will try all gears tomorrow and see what happens. I know when i changed oil i asked main dealer how much oil to put in as manual says 3.5 litres but it took nearly 5 to reach filler plug so questioned it and was told to drain down to only 3.5 which i found strange at time, i was always led to believe you fill to bottom of threads. Hopefully something simple like mount and not gearbox. Will keep you posted.
Cheers

I'm not aware you can haver too much oil in a gearbox, unlike an engine. Some people even jack it up one side so they can overfill it......and like you, I thought the filler plug was the level effectively.

Well just drained oil only to find some pieces of metal, Looks like breaking cage as to rollers. Now have the task to try and find a replacement and to work out the best way to drop the box out on my drive way. Phoned one gearbox place yesterday and was qouted £895.00 +vat for recon box but they haven't got one in stock so not sure as to what to do yet. Bloody needed it for this winter as well. Will have a look on here to see if anyone has posted best way forward. Any help appreciated please.

Its a pain being the 3.0 ltr....going rate for the 2.7 box is only 500-600.

Sorry its such a PITA....good luck!

Well got truck delivered back yesterday, They had it three days and replaced the Gearbox complete. Also checked clutch. Had an issue about 6 months ago when i changed the oil where the offical Nissan manual said 3.6 ltrs of oil but took @ 5ltrs until it came out of filler hole so asked the question at my local nissan dealer and was told " Only 3.6 ltrs " so drained some out. Was informed yesterday by Suffolk Transmissions "That must always fill until runs out" which is what i i thought but was told different from Nissan. My Gearbox was obliterated which may had something to do with lack of oil. So fill till runs out and the oil which was replaced was EP 75/90 semi synthetic. Manual gearbox by the way. Any way touch wood hopefully will be ok now.
