Heyup folks

I am on the verge of taking the plunge and buying a terrano. The wife previously had a maverick for but I only drove it the once and it has since been sold to my father in law, whose over the moon with it. He let me have a good drive of it this week and I really liked it so I am gonna chop my passat in for a terrano.

My question is this - Is the 3.0 the same engine as the 2.7 just uprated to give more power ? I'm asking this as it would be good to have the same engine as my father in law as we could work on them together and get to know the ins and outs etc

If any of you have owned both which would be your preference ?

Many thanks in advance

The 3.0 litre (ZD30DDti) and 2.7 litre (TD27Ti) engine are quite different, although the workshop manual covers both types.
Many of the ancillary parts are the same and the vehicle mechanicals largely identical.
The 2.7 unit has an enviable reputation as the base unit for many a black cab capable of achieving galactic mileages.

I have only owned a 3.0l and can say it performs well, mpg in the high 20's with plenty of torque and power on tap.

There are no similarities between the 2.7 and the 3.0, other than the fact they both burn diesel!

2.7- Indirect injection, iron head, iron block, standard wastegated turbo, intercooler in some instances, mechanical VE or electronic VP pump, 2valves / cylinder, ohv. Generally indestructable. 100-125hp @ 3600rpm depending on spec.

3.0 - direct injection, alloy head, iron block, VNT turbo, intercooled, VP or CR fuelling, 4 valves / cyl, DOHC. Often issues with crank bearings, EGR control and VNT control. 153-170hp @ 3200rpm. When going well, its a good motor. Surprisingly, not as fuel efficient as the 2.7.

Thanks for the replies lads - Was getting jumpy as a 3.0 had just come up for sale round the corner from me but judging by your replies i'll think i will hang on for a nice 2.7 as I like the sound of the reliability of it !! Also it will be the same engine as the fathers in law.

Cheers

Also 2.7 has gear driven top end so no timing belts or chains to worry about.

This don't mean the 27 is indestructable though but on the whole I think it's the better engine.

the 3.0lt also suffers from premature piston failure, i was looking at buying a 3.0lt and had a Google and found another forum, i would definitely do some research before you buy a 3.0lt. :thumb2

Cant recall details but when I was looking for a terranno my budget took me to late 2.7s early 3.0 land. Conclusion of the research was 2.7 all the way. More chance and the odds with you on getting a good un :thumb2

It was a good un too , sat in the dealers showroom when I part ex'd it for exactly 2 days :D

my zd 3.0 is dock for hgf, have found an unrelated piston cracked.

its chain driven over head cam, 16 valve.

heads up, 2.7 hgf 7 hours, 3.0 13 hours.

thermostat absolute twat, did manage it myself, but not the doddle
it was on my old 2.7.

3.0 is great when great, BUT.....

frankly would look at power boxing/chipping a good 2.7 if i had my
time again, mind love the troll, so wonder if should have gone bit
older with the 6 pot 2.8 td.

the zd has had issues in early years cracked pistons as said.
also ozzy ones 'grenading', possibly leg out of bed etc.

think that 2.7 is big enough in a terrano, and wish nissan had
left 4.2s in troll!

the main problem with the 2.7 is its so BLOODY heavy and really doesnt help handling of the T2 !!!

Just follow in your father in laws footsteps and you wont go far wrong !
