Hi All,

My other half reversed my car into a concrete post today, the car is insured (Fully Comp) in my name with her as a named driver. No one else was involved or saw the incident.

She also has a car which she insures in her own name.

My question is: (Yes I know this is a bit naughty!!)

If I claim on my insurance and say she was driving, will it effect both our premiums or would it be better (cheaper for both of us) for me just to say I was driving therefore it would only effect my policy.

If I do say she's driving then the next time I get a quote and they say have I had any accidents or claims in last 3 or 5 number of years would I have to say yes as it wasn't me that had the accident.

Any advise appreciated

my fist thing would be how much it would be to get fixed.

also is ncd protected..

I think I'm right in saying the claim sits with the car and therefore the responsible driver(s) so you might both have to declare it later - its why, when you buy a second car, your claims history on that second vehicle starts again and you have to build up NCD on it too - you can't get the same NCD you enjoy on your first car.

Since the claims dept is usually separate, it might be worth ringing and making a general enquiry of the sales department - say you're thinking of getting a quote and you wonder how this issue is managed...put whichever scenario you like to them

I think whichever way you do it, the question they ask is "any accidents or claims" to which you'd have to answer 'yes' as the claim is on your policy.

Depends on the damage but IMHO it might be better to swallow the cost of repairs yourself - depends on your claims history, current level of NCD and, as Zippy says, whether thats protected or not? e.g. if you have a reasonable NCD but its not protected and the damage is say £300 (and get a 'non-insurance' quote for gods sake!), its probably better to pay yourself.....and get benefit in kind from The Mrs of course!!!

By the way, what car type/age/value are we talking about and whats the extent of the damage?

Thanks Guy's,

I reckon it will cost about £1500 maybe more to repair.

We both have full Protected NCD at present.

Ouch - how fast was she going!

If you've got NCD then I don't think it matters as you won't be penalised financially (apart from the excess) unless you have had other claims. What I don't know the answer to is whether that NCD protection has any validity if you go elsewhere .... never tested that. Think about it - you will have to declare a claim, but does the fact you were paying a premium to your previous insurer to protect your NCD mean anything? Probably not....but as I say, I've never asked the question - anyone know?

But check the quote - you may find its only a third of that if you did it privately, bought the parts etc..

If it's just the rear bumper or poss the rear door you'll prob be able to get them via ebay & poss in the right colour:DTBH it might work out the same as you excess or just a bit more which in the long run I'd rarther do instead of knocking up next years price:augie

Hi All,

I've decided to just say it as it happened, thanks for all your reply's.

The Car's only just over a year old so want it repaired somewhere I know will do a good job rather than getting it done cheaply.

Thanks Again

hi hewey, the truth is usually the best route, if they were to find out they would revoke your insurance and refund you in full, then theres the question "have you had any insurance refused" you would have to say yes as it's on the computer, and then no one will insure you, or may be at a obscene price ( i know a guy who tired it on, and failed ) :doh

oh right so you drove into in then instead, is that what your saying My Lady

Thats good, one careful Lady owner then...

pity about all the others befor.....

Just like mine - shes seen plenty of accidents in her rearview mirror!

If it's just the rear bumper ....

Some $(*&$%(* person managed to cracker the rear bumper on my 05 Patrol in a Tesco carpark about 12 months ago. I still don't know how it was done - probably not by a vehicle, but could have been a full Tesco trolley at speed (or a maniac with a hatchet).

I was quite surprised to discover that a new bumper was loads cheaper than I'd imagined and that Adamsons in Oldham (really good accident repair specialists) could source the new bumper, spray it, transfer all the electrics across and fit it for a few coppers over £500.

If it's only the bumper, it might not be worth a claim.

Cheers
Andrew

Regardless of protected or not no claims discount a claim will cost you for the next 5 years - thats why they ask you about your accident history, they work out a premium and then apply your discount, if you've ad a claim that initial premium will be higher.

Basically Rear Bumper and Tailgate need replacing.

Haven't had a close look at it yet but may have damaged paintwork on both rear quarters where the rear bumper meets them as its popped the bumper off its mountings at both sides.!!
