HELP! Need a brake shoe urgently!

Don't replace just one shoe if that's what you meant. Always replace a full set.

Get phoning around local motor factors or even Halfords.

I must admit that is why I always throw the ones I remove away as soon as I do them, so I am never tempted.... We were drummed in when I went to automotive collage how bad it was to take brakes that had been fitted to one car, and then put them on another... they were so strict, we were not even allowed to swap the pads or shoes locations over when refitting.

I had to change my front pads the other day, as one of the front calipers had been sticking, and it had worn the pads that side down to 2mm, where as the other side were still up at 6 or 7mm... They were only changed at the last service 6K miles ago. It seemed awful to be throwing them away with so much pad still there, but I know if I had saved some in the past, I would have been tempted to use them at that moment, as it is a 2 mile walk to the motor factor, and by the time I discovered they were that bad, the car was in bits, so I had no choice but to walk it.:doh

thanks guys, I get the 'replace as a set', but trust me, if that were an option, i'd be doing it. I have no qualms about changing one rear shoe for the sake of a week, and have mixed sets over several years with no ill effect.

operation 'plan B' has been put into effect, and everything has been put into the smaller car, so holiday is back on.

Eurocarparts order placed for the old man to collect while I'm away, so I can fit over the easter weekend.

We like cheap fixes on this forum, but then there's cheap ... :augie

With reference to the brake linings, there have been a lot of failures over the last few years, it could well be a poor quality batch, or might have been supplied from new, it would be interesting if you could quote any manufacturer names and or part no.s then we might be in a better position to anticipate future failures. Same for our other members, I guess I could search the forum for one or two when I do my normal nocturnal activities... :lol:lol

It is clear from our experience that the other three shoes are at risk from failure, and failure once meant that one of our members had a complete rear wheel lock out, it could have lead to a rollover, loss of control or serious injury.

Not sure if a regular inspection could highlight a potential failure though.:nenau

Bosch rear brake shoes are the ones that are prone for losing the lining.
Not sure if they where the factory fitted ones one certain years.
Mine locked up solid and even though i wasn't going fast,was in tesco car park it puts the Shi***rs up you when your not expecting it.
I clean and check my rear brakes regularly but never noticed anything to suggest that it would fail.

Nope, never unsafe. Only need one really but other side is losing its chrome shine inside so not as bright, still very visible but looks a bit scruffy too.

Talking or indicators, who in their right mind decided to spray indicator bulbs with an orange lacquer, off set the pins, so no other bulb could fit, give the lacquer a two year life so it flakes off, and highlight the fact to the MOT man, if you are lucky, puts it down to an advisory. :doh

Then why did Skoda (and many others) design their cars, so the front bumper has to be removed and plastic panels cut, in order to gain access to a flakey indicator bulb?

Do I sound as if I'm ranting? well I'm sure I will, if I see a bill for £120 plus bulb lol at a future service.
Mav takes two minutes to replace the bulb, and that includes cleaning and drying the lens lol. I'm sure I could reduce that too. lol.:thumb2

Did a quick google on that, it makes me a bit angry tbh mate. Having to rely on someone else (most people anyway) just to change a bulb, utterly ridiculous :banghead. I found this below.

Note:*The Skoda Owners Manual that came with my car states "Changing certain bulbs is not something which you can do yourself, but requires to be done by a specialist. Other parts of the vehicle must be removed in order to change the light bulbs. This applies, in particular, to bulbs which can only be reached from the engine compartment.

well, i got the new set, and replaced them. god those 'automatic' adjusters are a pain in the proverbial

good point on the above, i kept the old ones with a view to looking at the manufacturer when i had cleaned myself up from all of the brake dust lol, i'll get a pic and any details i can find from them. they didn't look to be that worn, so they cant have been too old? as i say, will confirm later on tonight. :thumb2
