All of my drive belts working the fan, alternator, power steering stopped running and the battery light came on and overheating happened very quickly, the front pully is now loose. The engine is still running okay with no worrying noises. I was more or less stationary at the time as i was reversing into a parking space. My friend says it sounds like it could be the woodruff key? Is this easily fixed ? any help gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ian

Drive belt problems.

Whoops i forgot to say that the car is a Nissan Patrol manual 2000 2.8 Td6 GR SE model.

I haven't heard of a woodruff key for a long time, but if that's what's failed then replacing them is a fairly simple task.

They are, or used to be, like a little half moon which fits into a groove in the shaft and a corresponding one in the pulley.

They used to be popular on mopeds etc for holding sprockets and clutch baskets on. I suppose it was cheaper than engineering a splined shaft?

I hope you get it sorted. You used to be able to by assorted packs of them.

Regards

Alan

could the pulley be broken? it was a common issue on older 2.5 Peugeot diesel engines, especially ones with high miles :nenau

most modern pulleys are vibration damped via a rubber membrane between the outer belt pulley and the inner on the crank shaft, it is not unknown for them to part company especially if oil contaminated, Rick

thanks

Thanks all for your info, have had a look round on the web and found that the main front pulley is prone to parting company with the shaft connecting to the crank so will have to either replace or repair the pully where it connects. Waiting a call from my mechanic later today. fingers crossed.

I would think then, if the drive belts have been too tight, then this would put a strain on the lower pulley.

Is it the same on the Mav/Terrano?

yes they are damped, tight drive belts would not do anything to these pulleys they are very strong generally, sometimes a manufacturer cuts specs down a little too much and they get failures but as soon as they discover it the item is upgraded, maybe that is the problem on the patrol, we will see if the new pulley is an updated version, Rick

pulley

hi i`m not sure about the patrol, but i know a bloke who had a pajero he changed the waterpump and thermostat due to overheating when towing, he thought timing was out as marks didnt line up on bottom pully, after aligning the timing marks it would`nt run, further investigation found the outer part of the pulley had rotated on the inner crank pulley. the marks were about 15mm out. after removing the pulley he put it in a vise, he clamped the outer v pulley with a mole grips and you could rock it back and fore by about 25mm how it was previously running was a mystery, he had hell of a job finding a replacement as it was different from a shogun, and import parts were thin on the ground. he had one shipped from japan and cost him over 300 quid with postage, he didnt keep it long after.
