you may have a vacume fault it can take upto 20 meters to disenguage if it hasnt completly failed

The answer, provided by BAT 21, was:

(Switch the switch off first) and drive round in tight circles.

Sure enough I heard it pop right off after just a few metres. Glad the fix worked and glad I know it for the future!

Thanks Paul!

Hmm, sorry, I don't know! (I'd like to know though).

It's a part time 4x4 and I THINK the front axle doesn't have a diff, because you are not to use 4 wheel drive unless you are on ice, snow, sand or mud (because of transmission wind up). Could be mistaken on that one. If anyone can give a proper/correct explanation I would love to hear it.

Anyway, the noise def came from the rear of the car, so I'm guessing that is where the diff lock is situated - whether it locks just the rear or not ???

Shame he didn't answer in the thread. Sounds like useful info?

Alan, I don't think Paul was online at the time. I posted the thread and texted him at the same time (I had his number because I bought a gearbox from him). He replied by text. That's why the reply didn't go on the thread until now, sorry, should have updated sooner.

Sorry my 'half cocked' response was the problem.

Apologies to all!

Alan

they have a elctronicly operated vacume locking diff iirc might be wrong but they do have a diff lock
