If it's the same as motorbikes (i dont know) i got shown a really good trick.

My bike starter motor was temperamental, so put it in gear and roll it forwards in gear till you feel the engine "catch" (resistance of engine) then try again, this can somehow engage the starter motor.

Someone may be along to tell me this wont work but worth a try if your stranded :nenau

you are right mate but rocking mine on the starter wont make a difference I think the starter is knackered

so changing the starter is not an easy job but can be done my thinking is instead of giving the local garage my money nearly £50 an hour down here. I spend that money on some decent tools and do the job myself I have got to do lower suspension balljoints and velocity gators any way. so should I be able to do the starter motor in a day? thanks

starter motor should take no more than an hr and thats if you take your time

I had the same issues, turned out to be the starter motor. Get a genuine bosch refurbished unit if funds will allow. I did and it was £120 exchange. One on flea bay don't last.

thanks to all starter motors off took about 40 mins went and bought a set of ratchet spanners from Halfords as fez suggested they were good. sorry if im boring you all now but one more question if I put a live connection from the battery to the starter motor in a vice would this be a good way to see if it is deffinetly the starter motor before I go and spend money? the one that has come of is a bosch

Positive to large terminal on the starter motor, negative of battery to the outside casing of the starter motor.

Then place a wire on the solenoid terminal, and when you connect this to the positive of the battery, there should be a click, and immediately the starter motor will turn.

Caution, the starter motor can kick when connected, so make sure it is firmly held.

haven't had time to test yet but autostores have just gave me a different price from before bosch unit £99+vat does that sound about right

hi took the starter motor to a friend who tested it and found it is ok he took the solenoid cap off cleaned inside there and put some wd40 in just in case. he said it may be a dry switch in the solenoid but im back to checking connections again:banghead:
