Hi All,
Joined the forum a couple of days ago and just paid the membership fee today.

Looks like a really good forum.

I've just bought a 2000 T2 2.7TDI SWB (cheap-ish) and already found loads of great info for all the small and medium sized faults. Its a bit tatty as it was owned by a farmer for the last 2 years but seems to have a sound engine with only minor rust patches.

The only real problem i have at the moment is that my sons car is off the road and i've had to let him use the Terrano for a couple of weeks so not been able to start fixing the issues yet (not even been able to take a picture yet).

Cheers, Mike.

welcome aboard, loads of useful info and friendly people on here with a vast amount of knowledge :thumbs

Lets hear about the issues then mate, see if we can get them boxed off for you :thumb2

Ahh, glad you asked.

Short list if issues so far (son brought the truck back late this afternoon just long enough for me to have a poke around and change the rear LSD oil), i'm trying to get it back for an hour tomorrow as well).

1. Possible issue with the 4WD - when in 4H or 4L, the front offside driveshaft turns, but the left doesn't (forward or reverse). I can turn both driveshafts 1/4 turn by hand then they stop (both) so the auto lockers might be ok. I need to jack up the front and investigate more on this as at the moment but i definitely don't have 4WD.

2. Rear Door locking mechanism doesn't work (temp removed the little handle and fitted an internal release just for security. Also the rear window wiper doesn't work (all fuses seem OK under the bonnet).

3. Bumper mount bracket on front offside has rusted off so needs a new long bracket fabricated.

4. Rust patch (would be a 3" diameter hole if i pressed it) on the rear of the offside sill, also on the rear door (bottom left).

5. Sunroof doesn't open/close - don't care really but it also leaks and need to get to the rain channels etc as its filled up the drivers foot well with water. I don't seem to be able to move the manual screw on the motor mechanism.

6. half the interior bulbs have blown (auto box selector/half the heater controls), radio LCD panel mainly blank.

Apart from that, tatty/dirty inside, but nothing a play in the mud won't make worse.

On the positive side - the engine seems spot on and the auto gearbox works as it should.

My main concern is the front Diff/nearside drive shaft. the front hub i quickly took off is filled with black grease (and will clean out both when i get a chance), but i don't think this is the issue as the nearside drive shaft should have turned in 4H and didn't.

Hopefully won't take to long to sort (once i get the truck back).

OK your major issue, the others are niggles, your OS hub is bad if the OS shaft turns but just how did you establish this? Rick

welcome.
that's not a big to do list mate:thumb2
you have found the right place for all your info.

wait till you get your truck back and go through the list one job at a time..
most pressing first..

Hi buddy, welcome to the forum, lots of knowledge here to be shared. I'm sure all will be sorted before you know it :thumb2

|Check your auto hub just for piece of mind, if it is the shaft that's a bit worrying :nenau let us know how you get on with that

They can get a bit gunked up, grease the mechanism, I'm sure there's an adjuster on the cable if I'm not mistaken, check the wires to the motor with a multimeter on setting 2 on the stalk , you should get a pulsing 12v reading, if you don't problem is with your wiring, if you do, you've got a duff motor

3. Bumper mount bracket on front offside has rusted off so needs a new long bracket fabricated.

Easily solved with by someone who can weld

4. Rust patch (would be a 3" diameter hole if i pressed it) on the rear of the offside sill, also on the rear door (bottom left).

Can't really help you on that one

6. half the interior bulbs have blown (auto box selector/half the heater controls), radio LCD panel mainly blank.

Clocks come out easily enough, it might not be the bulbs, there's a conductive membrane that sits between the clocks and the bulb, sometimes these wear out and can be fixed with a dab of solder

Fixes above :clap

Basically, i got my son to look at the driveshafts whilst i crept forward and reversed a few metres whilst in 2H (neither turn) and 4H - only the offside shaft turns, nearside shaft does not rotate. However i can crawl underneath and rotate both driveshafts (one at a time - engine off and transfer box in 2H) and both will move a 1/4 of a turn clockwise/anticlockwise before i can't turn them any more (by hand).

Hopefully i can loo again tomorrow .

Neither should turn in 2H

What happens if you drop it in neutral in both boxes? Do they spin then?

I've now got 4WD :D:thumb2

Both front hubs degreased as per the really excellent guides on this forum - all now working. Better get some proper tyres now.
