What colour is the smoke?
if you did not kill it before it over revved then chances are your pistons touched a valve or two, if you need a turbo and it is a TDi then I have one, in fact a complete engine but it is suffering blow by so bock prob not good but head should be OK, but what happens when you remove the oil filler while idling, is there a lot of air/oil mist emmiting, Rick
I thought the head was mine, if it was OK!!!:bowif you did not kill it before it over revved then chances are your pistons touched a valve or two, if you need a turbo and it is a TDi then I have one, in fact a complete engine but it is suffering blow by so bock prob not good but head should be OK, but what happens when you remove the oil filler while idling, is there a lot of air/oil mist emmiting, Rick

think that was staged, true engine runaway means it revs to destruction as it will go far beyond it's safe rev limit typically they will only last tens of seconds before a con rod breaks, Rick
Blue / white colour.
We did replace the derv return pipes as they fell apart when we touched them so may be some air in the system? :nenau
Check out this video of deisel runway ay, gave me a really good insight to it.
The guys are taking their time (been stood for 30 years)
You can see all the technicians crap themselves, then the "old skool" tech casualty strolls over like.... What :nenau

I'd be the kid in the blue once the engine fired up :lol
Rick would be the guy strolling up to the on fire engine like "whats all the fuss about" ?
I presume when the smoke was coming out of the exhaust when it turned black, was it at that point the engine would have been fueling itself from oil out of the sump? :nenau

Bloke I know was working in the H&W shipyard doing a refit on some sort of boats engine when it ran away, everybody scattered but the foreman, an old guy a few weeks off retirement, casually strolled up and threw his brown foreman's coat into the intake to stall the thing before it blew up.
oh and i will add, thats the best way to check your snorkel is plumbed in properly aswell, put a bag over the head and see if it stalls :thumbs
Just dont let the bag get sucked in!
