hedge cutter

hi guys .
I am thinking of buying a long reach hedge cutter as my hedge is 8ft tall .
my thoughts are for a petrol one .
there are some company`s selling new ones on e` bay.
plus a few second hand ones.

I have always cut them with an electric standard hedge cutter.
tressals and planks it gets interesting when i get to the fish pond not fell in yet but had a few close calls.
the last time I cut the hedge
i tye wrapped the hedge cutter to a 8tf light weight steel box section .
a bit top heavy but managed ok.

We've had great results with a cheapo rechargeable hedge trimmer from B&Q :thumb2

Dont know if the battery would last long enough for you and of course youd need some nice wobbly a frame step ladders too.

Get a Stihl, mate. They do one with an extendable pole and interchangeable head with a small chainsaw which would be ideal for the job :thumbs

I also have a long 8ft hedge, its so solid now I am able to lean ladders against it. I have a flymo sabre trim, this has a large battery ( very heavy) 24v which you carry on your shoulder.
It extends and also has a strimmer head. It does work but not as well as a mains trimmer so I still find myself up a ladder although I know i shouldn't at my age, being a pensioner I cannot afford to pay some one else and both our sons live over 300 miles away I suppose it "needs must". I suspect a petrol one would work better even though it will be heavier and noisier. regards bri

hi well I got a maxtra hedge cutter of e bay ran last year wouldnt start this .
ive checked spark .good and strong gave me a belt:doh
ive drained fuel mix and started again.
plug getting wet so fuel getting through.
but its not firing.
its got one of them bubble primers .which works ok.
hand choke .working .
hand throttle /lever with a locking device that holds it at 3/4 throttle.
compression seems ok.
any idea of starting procedure.
I paid £45 for it they are selling new for £135.on the bay.
so if i can get it going :clap:clap:clap

I use long handled , short handled hedge cutters on a daily basis and with a hedge being 8ft plus then there are obviously advantages in cutting the hedge with a long handled hedge cutter, what hedge is it ? conifer , beech , pyracantha, yew, etc , it makes a difference as you will still need the tressals to top the hedge , you can change the angle of the long reach hedge cutter to 90 degrees but they dont top your hedge perfectly , you still need to be above the hedge to get a nice table top finish , i have used every hedge cutter on the market and stihl is the best by far .. heres the one we currently use awsome bit of kit .

Mate, I hope you didn't store it with the fuel in it? Petrol will break down and gum up the carb unless you add a fuel stabiliser. Try some fresh fuel and you might be lucky.

ive had a go at it again replaced petrol with the stuf i have been using in the mower its fine in that but its 4 stroke .left over from last years cutting season so i hope thats stale will get some fresh tomorrow.
it has been firing on it but wouldnt start.
I took plug out and sprayed some penetrating oil in and it ran on that so looking a bit more promising.
I stripped the carb down and it looked ok .
On top of the carb is the throttle linkage it has a rising action which lifts the fuel needle i removed this and using a Big syringe blew down it and fuel vapour was expelled into throttle body so i would say jet is clear.
WHAT IS THE STARTING PROCEDURE WITH THIS TYPE OF ENGINE .
It has a bubble primer ,choke, and throttle .

I can tell you how to start a Stihl. 6 goes on the primer, then full choke and no throttle, pull until it fires. Then give it half choke, pull until it fires and runs then give it light throttle only until it's wam. Hope that works for you :thumb2

BUGGERED.:doh
took the head and barrel off (all one piece),little end none existent.
no C clips holding gudgeon pin in place although piston has re baits cut into it for same.
piston scored enough to trap rings both broke when i took them out.
barrel OK.
engine is 35cc read that ring from a Honda Melody will fit but would have to have a little end turned to fit con rod.
Centre punch piston to hold gudgeon pin in place but not happy at that as it revs to 7k.
will contact the people who sell these machines on e bay to see if they can help

well ixe been in contact with the suppler and thay sold me a new piston kit.
including little end bearing gudgeon pin piston rings and C clips
All for £30 including delivery by Currier next day delivery.
All fitted and running ok.
what is the correct 2 stroke mixture?
Blades require adjustment to take away some free play.
anyone know how much free play they need?
