Heater matrix?

Well we just got back from Wales today and had a few problems. We were towing up a long steep motorway hill, and there was a hot water smell. We stopped at the top to let the engine cool, then set off again. About a hour later, there was the hot water Smell then smoke from under the dash, in the centre. We stopped on the hard shoulder let it cool again then went on. Then there was the smoke again. For about 5 minuits then it went
