Heater matrix replacement

Gents,
Can anyone tell me if the whole dash will have to come out to get the heater matrix out off a 2.7 TD swb as mine has started to leak and I want to remove it to see if I can repair it as I dont really want to spend anymore money on this car now as I feel its a money pit at teh moment.
I dont mind spending my time on the car but when it comes to more money I am starting to get angry with it now!!!!

hi ckc100 WITH A COLD ENGINE
try pooring tin of rad weld down heater hose . run untill heater is hot may take 1/2 hr so go for a short run 3rd gear keep revs up to keep water pumping around faster.
IF IT WORKS LET ENGINE GO COLD AGAIN THEN .take thermostat out bend it so it dont close ,so it will circulate all through system wont create as much pressure .
mine LASTED 3 MONTHS LIKE THIS.
ITS A FULL DAYS JOB TO STRIP OUT DASH AND EVERYTHING .
IF NOT LONGER IT TOOK ME ALL WEEKEND.its my truck in w downloads.
do a SEARCH under heater matrix for suppiers and prices ect.
approx £70 they can be repaired but you wouldnt be able to use truck .

I was loosing coolant slowly and saw feint antifreeze stain on passenger side carpet. Couldn't see any leaks around engine. Suspected heater matrix leak. Bought large tin of Radweld. Got engine good and warm, coolant level was down to min mark, poured Radweld into coolant reservoir tank and took bus for a five mile spin. Left vehicle overnight and checked next day.Coolant level was steady and has stayed so for over four months. Seems to have done some good
Hope it stays like that without any serious restrictions to circulation. :smile:
Thought about reducing pressure in system by drilling small hole in rad cap sealing disc (figured thermostat has not much to do with pressure) but didn't bother because I wanted to keep engine temperature at correct level. All SEEMS well so far ---approx 2000miles since radweld went in.
Fingers still crossed but so far, so good. Perhaps it might work for you too. Certainly worth a try at the price of a tin of radweld.

Thanks for the information gents,
I all ready tried rad weld in the system and it lasted about 5 weeks. In fairness though I did just throw it into the radiator, I may well try for adding it straight in to the heater matrix pipe work as I have the heater bypassed at present which gives for a very cold ride. Adding to the source of the leak may give a better result.
