Hi all, today i noticed my heater control only seemed to work on full speed so i had a look through the downloads and hey presto....

So a quick read and time to grab a screw driver.
I removed offending part and heres what i found..

cleaned it up and there is an obvious break

So i decided to have a go at bridging the gap with some solder

and hey ho it works like a dream, once again the forum has saved me time and money getting a garage to repair it.

that's a different resistor to what's in mine, mine was bigger and was shaped like a spring :augie

This is a great forum with lots of help and advice....why would anyone leave? :bow

Nice fix :thumb2

Ironically I was reading this whilst soldering lol

heater resistor

done exactly the same repair today, and now heater working on all 4 settings.
bridge open circuit with a drop of solder. Never realised how hot that resistor got when testing after repair. lot of resisitance on fan speed 1. Used oven gloves to refit. thanks for the info.

Only problem is that solder is lower resistance so making the circuit lower in resistance and so the current increases putting more strain on the rest of the ageing resistor film. It may well go again in another part of the resistor in a month or two :(

solder a bridge in with some wire :thumbs

The thinner part of the film is actually a safety feature, it is designed to go open circuit (fuse) if too much current is drawn from the motor. In this case It has probably gone open with age and current surges from being switched on and off over the years.
If you solder across it then it will seriously overheat if the motor drags current due to mechanical or electrical failure. If the motor isn't drawing then there is nothing cooling the resistor film either which compounds the issue....... I wouldn't bridge over it they arn't expensive - buy a new one. :augie

located right in the far left corner passenger side , held in with 2 scews , i got a new one for mine £37 off nissan , been there done that on repairing them , had a laurel moons ago and soldered it lasted about a week
