Not being clued up on SVO usage and heat exchangers, Is the purpose to thin the SVO before the fuel rail? For some reason I had it in my bonce that the issue was getting the SVO to flow down the supply lines?

yep before it gets into the pump

alas the heat exchanget will ONLY work when hot..

btu still need to start a cold engin, the electric heaters dont work, as cant heat the fuel so got to thin the oil down with diesel...

you lost me on this one zipps.... please explain

looks like an old oil cooler that should be inside the engine, how will that heat your svo ?????

its a heat exchanger from a bloiler...

hot water in from one side, cold svo other side.. will come out hot.. ( thats the plan. and be a bit thinner for pump to work better..

do you run straight veg oil?

at teh mo yes, but getting cold, so looking at the exchanger and mixing with diesel....

why not just fit a heater from a td fuel primer, its electric and heats from cold. simples

The Mk1's have it as standard :D

But i now know the hard way to stick with diesel / bio & svo :thumbs NEVER do sun flower oil again :doh

mk1's do but i think mistrals don't! just in case your searchng a breaker :thumb2

yup :thumb2

a full kit has one of the electric heaters for early svo running before a rad type is up to speed :thumb2 both types of heaters have their pros and cons.

so you could fit the electric one and keep your heat exhanger to go with it, it looks a nice tidy job so far mate :thumb2

is there any danger that a het exchanger will get the oil too hot for the pump ?

when i was doing mine the concensus was yes it is possible, not probable but defo possible.

Thats why you need to carefully work it out when youre going for 100% svo.

Best all round combo is probably one or more carefully placed electric heaters with a water heat exchanger.

Make sure the water heat exchanger isnt big enough to cause problems and will only warm not fry. Then when its not hacking it the leccy ones kick in to assist. Once it gets hot enough the cheap and cheerful electric thermostats cut them out :thumb2

or so I was told. I got as far as the leccy ones and sold the car :D

I remember plumbing in an oil cooler rad a while back and that had a by pass thermostat but of course that opened when the oil got hot not cold, Ive not seen one that does it the way round youd need on this though theres bound to be one out there somewhere

so what will you do from cold zipps??

I remember a while back seeing a article in a mag that may help others and it was that the guy had 2 tanks, a small diesel tank (10 ltrs), that he started the vehicle up on and ran for say 6/7 mins, this warmed the water system up to temperature, enough to warm the svo up and then he switched over to the larger svo tank.Thing is if we were to employ this type of system on our motors any idea where the smaller tank would go as obviously the original tank would be used for the svo, I personally dont want to take up any room in the rear unless its a dedicated style tank that dont look out of the way and anyone know what the consequences are when you go for a Mot and insurance etc,

Yes the twin tank system. I don't think they're as sophisticated as say an lpg conversion. I remeber seeing a picture of a kit for sale. The "tank" for the svo was basically a plastic jerrycan you fastened in your boot with the supplied "mounting kit" :(

Bit of a catch 22 I found insurance wise. No insurers were bothered about you using svo so no effect. But some were quite anal about electrical mods and installations.

daved, What a pity it aint a nice highly polished race style 10 ltr can, at least we could have a bit of bling on the motor :lol :lol :lol Do you think the system (2 tanks) is better or worse than anything else youve come across. :nenau :nenau :nenau
