Hi well after getting the mot sorted i got another problem for some reason the header tank has started emptying itself. I cannot see any problem with the radiator or hoses. I think its coming out of the overflow on the tank itself. It has been suggested to me that it could be there thermostat any help would be much appreciated as i am going to Devon on Monday for the week thanks

I should probably add that there is only water in the cooling system no antifreeze i don't know if this would cause the tank to empty

I take my thermostat out during the summer & put it back in for the winter with anti freeze.

I've had 3 square headlamped 1's now & they all lost water from the header tank but not the rad / no leaks ;)

So i wouldn't worry to much :thumbs

Thanks as you say just header tank not rad i can't work it out.so if i take the thermostat out it wont effect the running of the car i got 170 miles to do Monday to Devon mainly motorway

No, just runs cooler ;)

( My conclusion is the heat makes it expand & come out the overflow )

Check the radiator cap, may be letting by, then when the engine cools down the water gets sucked back into the system
Could be the rubber seal, I had one shift sideways on my cirtoen, took ages to find the problem

Anti freeze serves several purposes, in addition to it's name.
It also acts as a rust inhibitor, so slows down corrosion.
Anti freeze also raises the normal boiling point of water, so instead of turning to steam a 100 C at normal atmospheric pressure, it has a much higher boiling point, depending on the strength.

Add to that, in a pressurised system, the boiling point will also be increased, hence in a pressurised system, if you release the rad cap quickly on a hot engine, the hot water turns instantly to steam.

So my thoughts are... the system is not holding pressure, using standard water under these circumstances will encourage water loss.

If you do have a leak, if it is plain water, it can evaporate and won't leave a deposit, so you won't know where it is leaking. You may only have a small leak, one drop of water a minute adds up over time, and won't be that obvious.
It might just be a simple case of tightening those jubilee clips.

If there is anti freeze in the system, if there is a leak, you will see some residue in the form of crystals.

So my recommendation, always use the correct grade of anti freeze, 50% gives the best overall performance.:thumb2

As suggested, there could be leak past on the rad cap.
Doesn't sound too much of a problem, but running with low levels of coolant will create more problems.

My 1995 Mav bottle stays at the same level year on year, in fact I never add any water between anti freeze changes. BUT one winter, I did see a puff of steam, when in a queue, on inspection, it was a jubilee clip on the top rad hose, a 1/2 turn later with a screw drive ... sorted. The hose compresses over time as they age, and can cause leaks.

Hope it helps,
best regards,

Rustic

When it does empty the water it's always the same place by the drivers' side wheel quite alot of water to i will check the connections and radiator cap and put some antifreeze in.do i need to drain the cooling system to be able to get the antifreeze in if so how would i go about doing this thanks. In my view I don't think antifreeze is the problem i could be wrong. Mine was doing that altho my water pump has and still got a small drip but about a month ago it was pouring out of the pump. What I did notice was that the radiator was cold and was building quite a bit of pressure in the pipes, I thought the head gasket had blown, after mucking about with it, turned out it was a big air lock in the radiator, and back to a small drip. Am not saying that's your problem but definitely worth checking. Make sure the rad is full of water and kneed the rad pipes to get the air out of the system, it worked for me, mine has no antifreeze in it at the mo, not putting any in until I put a new pump on.

Run it with the rad cap off & if there is air in it watch until the bubbles disappear :sly :thumbs

My money here is a leaky water pump, do you notice your header tank bubbles when you stop the engine?

Yeah it doesent sound normal, can't imagine nissan wanted it to leave the factory like that :lol

Yep radiator cold and seems to be air in the pipes the pump had a small leak couple months back but seems to have stopped
