Right after a few problems i seemed to of work issues with the truck,so today i thought id give the truck fresh oil and filter.Took to for a run before hand to get it up to temp and then whipped it up on the ramps

When i lifted the bonnet thinking of it i did kind of smell an oily smell but at the time didnt take any notice.Drained the oil out and flushed it out. However when i refilled it i let it tick over for a bit as i put 6 litres of oil in and blipped the throttle.

All of a sudden when it was still on tick over the rev's went right up and smoked like hell.Tryed turning it off but wouldnt so wacked it into gear to make it stop as it started to knock.Took the air intake off and seen loads of oil in there so cleaned it up.Left it for a bit to dry out so tryed to start it and had it in gear ready to see what would happen. Was ok for 15secs then started reving and smokeing do killed it straight away as it was knocking like hell. Then what ive noticed now is that there must of been to much pressure as it shot the dipstick out covering the engine bay as well as next doors white wall.

Im going to take what i can off to see whats going on and clean it up,but the big issue is is it fubar'd :(:(

The only thing ive done was i noticed the other day that the pipe from the blowby valve to the rocker cover was blocked(somewhere in the rocker cover the blockage was) and not had it running for a few day as was waiting for a starter motor which i fitted last nite.

Need some advise asap as im stuffed without a motor and need to work out how to fix if possible and if not ill break it down and get a replacement motor

First impressions are the turbo oil seals are shot. Pours oil into the engine and the engine runs on the oil and you have no control of it. All you can do is stall it like you did. Ive heard of this happening to people but dont know if that is what has happened here or not. I do know if thats the case and you dont stall it the engines revs its self to death.

I replaced the turbo about 2 months ago but have noticed that there is now a oily like shine in the water now where i took the rad cap off

Before you try to re-start it, I would remove the intercooler, and the pipe that runs between the airbox and the turbo.

With the IC off, the air will be coming straight into the inlet manifold, so there should be no more Oil there, once it has burnt off any left in there of course.

You will then be able to see if the oil is coming in from the turbo, or is being pushed through the breather system.

Before you put it back together, remember to stand the IC on it's end so any oil drains out, you will be surprised just how much it can hold.

In this configuration you will not be able to rev the engine easily, but it will at least allow you to look for the source of the oil without killing the engine.

edited to add.... if it still runs away, then you are looking at bad news regarding the engine.

I'm out at the minute and mobile but can anyone link him to Terranomans thread.

Did he ever fix his or did he get away with stalling it?

The Turbo blew on my van just the same recently, I also bought a new Intercooler to ensure no turbo bits were in it, did you flush out your IC ?

My engine fine now by the way

is it safe to run the truck for a min or 2 with the intercooler removed ???

It's safe to run the engine, as long as you are not somewhere dusty, as you have no airfilter to clean the drawn in air. Also make sure you keep everything away from the hole, as it sucks like you would not believe.

You won't be able to drive it though, as the MAF will be upset by the lack of air passing it, and won't give you any extra fuel.

Right a bit of a update on this.I took the intercooler off and left it on its side and as everyone said, there was oil in there. So with that off i started the truck up and as said tick over was not the best however there was no nasty bangs, oil flying out everywhere. What we did notice was there was drops of oil being spat out from the outlet from the turbo which im sure its not to be doing that. Also had the blowby valve pipe that would go to the air filter disconnected and put the end of it in a bottle and no signs of oil was there.

So am i right in thinking its the turbo that i need to replace.......again :nenau

Certainly looks like it, but to be sure I would be running the engine at as high revs as I could get for at least 5 minutes if it is still spitting out oil then change it, but it may stop after a minute or so indicating it is just residue from whatever caused the oil to be there in the first place, was the turbo you fitted a used one or recon unit? Rick

From a numpty i would say its looking that way but question is was it a new one and can you claim a warranty? Also what was wrong with your old one? Problem isnt related in someway is it?

Turbo was a second hand one as i was told by someone said it was gone on the old one,so warranty on it.With the engine running and i forgot to say also the pipe from the turbo to the air filter was removed as there was oil in there as well, the motor wont rev past 2000rpm but i had the maf connected though. Also i do have a video as well of it running with them bits removed which ill upload asap if that helps

How the heck would to stall a run away diesel engine with an auto box

Not an easy one this, and will depend on your ability and vehicle position, and if a mate is nearby, but your only hope is to put it in gear this will at least stop the engine exploding, but of course it will try and lurch forward and the hand brake is unlikely to hold it, if there is something in front then let it gently forward till it touches and release the foot brake to see if it holds, if it does then pop the bonnet and rip the intake pipe off to the turbo and whack a map book over it, do not use your hand it will hurt, if you have a mate handy he can do this for you, but auto box will only last a few minutes like this before it overheats and also starts to destroy itself, and all this will be happening when you are panicking, so as said at the start NOT EASY, Rick

Block the air intake

Nice one but you neglected to say how, I have given an example in my post, but not easy especially if you are on your own and do not have an available lamp post to nudge the car up against, if it is not put in gear there will be no where near enough time to block the inlet before the engine blows, Rick
