my mistral has a hand throttle , it looks a bit like a choke ...lately i need to pull it out quite a lot to stop the car shaking itself to bits and to have a tickover around 750 rpm, .... ok i know the weather is getting colder , but surely as the car warms up i shouldnt need to keep it out a long way ?

ideas ?

i wouldnt be using the choke when its warm, youll break it i think...

so, with choke fully closed, when car is warm, what you saying, its rattling at idle?? how much rattle? mines been ok lately, but normally, it rattle a bit and idles at what looks like 650rpm, what is yours idling at?

p.s. just to be clear, i think its a manual choke you have there, not hand throttle. I used to have one on my Fourtrak, its for very cold starts only as far as i know!

i have the same choke but mine only ticks over slow when it has just been cold started then it stops

pete i am sure that the choke is a choke as it dosnt run as freely when i have used mine once it has warmed up

Suggest your warm idle is a touch low- it should be 750-850rpm- or at a speed where vibrations go away. The "choke" lever is just a fast idle control, although it does advance the timing a touch also.

Your timing may be a touch retarded on the pump if you need to make excessive use of this control.

Mine is a hand throttle, useful when decending rough roads, saves the right boot bouncing on the throttle.
It is NOT a choke.
If the car runs rough when cold and not warm, could be glow plugs.

mine just ticks over at arround 400 rpm when started from cold about 5 mins latter it is fine

but if i have the choke/hand throttle on when the car reaches temp then the car seems to hold the accleration back just like it would if using a choke on a petrol engine

The cable from mine goes straight to the same place as the throttle cable, I know this as I had to repair mine. I use it for fine adjustment on the tickover revs to stop my truck from shaking itself to pieces when its cold. :thumb2

diesels dont have chokes , or so ive been told ....i understand having to use the hand throttle to start from cold , but surely i shouldnt have to keep it out half way for it to run normally ?:nenau

I couldn't understand how a diesel could have a choke, so I had a look at where it went. As said above, as far as I can tell the only thing it does is the same as the foot throttle. ie. just revs it up a bit.
My old Nissan Cabstar had one the same, but instead of a pull thingy you wound it in or out. In fact i think that one did just go to the foot pedal mechanism. Did the same thing.

No diesels do not have chokes, Petes has a hand throttle from memory it goes to a lever on the pump, whatever, Pete check the plug in connectors around the thermostat housing, one of your plugs has lost its clip and could have vibrated out, Rick

hi guys .
this hand throttle also enriches fuel via a second lever attached to fuel pump .(cold start devise) AS well as hand throttle used in cold parts to pre warm engine before driving.
If you leave it on to long it will over fuel and black smoke and eventually stop engine if left to idle.
DONT ASK ME HOW I KNOW..:doh
ho all right then ill tell you.
second lever had stuck part way after i used it on maiden voyage.:doh
