H/T tyres

hi guys,

just thinking about this. I have H/T tyres on the Terrano, and I need to replace one. Ive never had HT tyres on a 4x4 before, so I have no idea what they will be like in the snow. So far in the wet etc they are great.

Does anyone have any experience with HT tyres, will they cope with the heavy snow when it comes?
I ask because I don't see the point in spending the money on the ONE tyre I need if the HT tyres aren't gonna be any good when I need them to be!

Dont know about HT tyres.I have BF Goodrich All Terrain.Great off road tyres,but they dont clear the snow very quickly due to their tread pattern.Having said that i have had them on for a couple of years now.Long lasting and no problems..

If you're not going off road Clive H/T will be fine. :thumb2
As long as you have 4 good tyres and 4 wheel drive the snow shouldn't cause any problems, save your hard earned and just get one tyre.

i did last snowfall on bridgestone h/ts without any problems, felt very sure footed. ive changed to maxxis a/t tyres for this year (goodridge tread pattern) and hope they perform just as good.

As long as the tyres have plenty of sipes you'll be fine as these fill with snow & aid traction on snow:augie in 2010 we had 2ft deep snow for a good month & was getting around fine on Grabber AT2's which are heavily siped

did most of derbyshire and notts lanes on hts on the old patrol.

reckon most of time its how you put power down than tread pattern.

wear em out then look at all terrains, or if feeling flush get some spare
rims and muds, but then have to factor in time to swap em and then
having wrong set on for given situation.

still happy with my cooper atr's, not really laned em but have worked
em harder dragging the old tin tent off muddy sites.

ok, this is odd. money is very tight for me right now - bought the Terrano and could afford certain things to fix it up but didn't really expect to need a new tyre but there you go. Went onto BlackCircles because I figured id get two tyres fitted at home. Turns out they have a pay later scheme through Pay4Later or something, you have to spend £300 or over. I did an example purchase, 4 cheap budget tyres fitted at home came in at £320. ON the Pay Later scheme its £356. You pay 30 odd quid deposit then £27 a month for 12 month (all adds up to the £356)

I don't think that's too bad, but I didn't realise this sort of thing was going on - buying tyres on credit?! I suppose its a good idea, and the interest rates are reasonable. Means its easier to afford a full set of tyres over a longer period of time, like for me im a bit skint and Christmas is coming so I am going to give it some thought....what do you guys think?

I went to a different place and priced up 4 kingpin tyres, that came in much cheaper, but didn't include fitting so I am going to check that out first before doing anything...

It's suprising how good H/T (Highway Terrain) tyres can be on the right truck.
on my troll they were quite good but on the ford Ranger they were a bit crap.

I had Insa Turbo Traction Trac' on last troll but they were a bit aggressive BUT awesome in the snow and Ice:clap

Got BFG MT'son latest troll but don't go too far too fast.

The BFG AT's on my Ranger are now up to 37,500 miles with no visible signs of wear but I will check that tomorrow

just get the 1 HT if you want my opinion and save up for a cheap set fron somewhere when you got the ££'s if you get them on rims it will save swap over costs too

I've got 2 part worns you can have 1 is a Khumo A/T 3-4mm and the other is a Vigor A/T 4-5mm. Your welcome to them if they will put you on. I did last winter with the 2 Vigors on the front and 2 Khumos on the back.

yeah my problem is im trying to get a matching pair on the back at least - none of my tyres are matching!! And then you start thinking, "might as well get a full set" blah blah!!

I did find what appeared to be the ideal wheel and tyre on ebay, but when I spoke to the seller, the tyre was a totally different type and make to what I have (AT tyre) and I didn't see the value in that.

Yep checked them today - still got the bobbles on them - Just :thumbs

That's good to hear as I have those too. Not tried them on anything other than the great British potholes yet

I had Maxxis Mudzilla MTs on my old Paj and they were AMAZING in the snow, mud, rain, sand and just about anything than good old tarmac - but then MTs aren't designed for tarmac and my loony driving :augie

Sadly I don't think General are making the AT2 any more which is a shame:doh

well, hopefully my new tyres go on today. I decided to get a set of four because I found a good deal on eBay. Totally skint but at least I have four matching tyres that were double the cost of one, so that's not toooo bad.
