had smelt diesel over kebab shop across road:eek::eek: underside of truck very dry aparat from o/s/r tank and membrane next to it and when i came out of tesco's small puddle, very small, under truck. filled tank yesterday so assuming at moment that may be coming from sender unit?

will investigate that tomorrow.

can i take the cover off without tank being loosened?

what can i use to fill seams if it is the seems of the tank?? (chemical metal?)

think i may need a gasket or something. need to check pipes from above to make sure not split.

yea ya fuel lines sound like they've rotted through, easy job to replace with some fuel grade rubber hose

You can take the boot floor cover off to reveal the tank sender unit if it is leaking then most likely corroded be careful with floor cover and sender screwsas they shear easy, the sender has large rubber O ring, but more likely are your pipes, if it is the tank seam then little can be done, Rick

The tank seams are very vulnerable to rust, especially the front one.
Where the top meets the lower part of the tank, the seam is welded using a narrow roller, about 20 mm in from the outer edge.
Unfortunately water gets in between the upper and lower section, and starts the dreaded tin worm, which as the steel converts to ferrous oxide (rust) it expands, and the expansion can be enough to burst the seam.
The normal edge of the tank when new is around 3mm, but when subjected to rust can expand to 7 or 8mm, and by undoing the forward fixing bolts can release energy and cause a much greater leak.

Finding a second hand tank that is serviceable is a rare quest.

The SWB tanks are a different size to the LWB.
As far as I am aware, petrol and diesel tanks are virtually the same, although the petrol version has a pump.
Removing the upper inspection plate, can shear the M5 bolts, so take extreme care if you are taking this route.

Hope it helps, if this is where your leak is.

Rustic

I undid the 3 bolts at the rear of the tank guard and got a nice surprise in sainsburys multi story car park when the whole tank pivoted down :doh

Be careful and if you are gonna do it make sure you have something to hold it up with or a semi empty tank.

It is awfully difficult to push up tank and guard and relocate bolts

Also they are thread locked... Probably for a reason :naughty

I have to ask Alex, why did you need to undo the bolts and in a multi story ?????? Rick

You just had to ask.... I thought the same thing, then decided the answer would be too scary to fathom, and best leave it...:D

Think it was to sort out his rear number plate:lol

Yep spot on, lost the plate off-roading, ordered a new one, could not fit at home as it was hammering down, so drove to multi story, went to fit new plates and realised guard was too close to tank, so though "ah ok, I'll just remove the guard and drill through"

Whilst removing the bolts I did think to myself "Jesus this bolts are hard to undo" :clap

I had the absolute bare minimal of tools with me too... Took me a while but all done, problem averted :lol

I think Alex could write the script for the New Dad's Army film, or write the script for a new "Carry on Film"

Maybe "Carry on Off Roading"

Staring Alex, as him self...

The script could go something like this...
Alex... take your shogun to the post office...
Unfortunately Alex misheard, and took his Shotgun instead..
He's now waiting trial...:augie

:lol:lol

:clap love it Rustic :thumbs

You have a great sense of humour!

RICK!!!!, can you remove Alex's fuel sender unit and check he has a clean tank :augie:augie:lol

I think Alex should be able to do that on his own now, after all he has part removed his fuel tank and managed to refit it, without it falling on the floor, Rick

As r1cho says check the fuel pipes first. Mine had gone where they go over the chassis and run close to the tank.
This was leaking onto the lip of the tank and running down further back giving the impression at first glance that the tank was leaking.
Start simple and work your way up:thumb2

I might give it a go, all that looks difficult is shearing bolts ect :lol

Plenty of penetrating oil and work them very small amount each way till they feel free, if you do shear any they can be drilled right through and tapped out larger and threads sealed with gasket goo, Rick
