Hi been playing with the daughters td Terrano 11 L reg

compared to my tdi it seems very slow, and drinking loads of fuel and smoking grey smoke

we have cheaked:

the little fuel filter (been removed before so nothing there)

replaced the air and big fuel filter

blocked the egr (no diferance) could do with some better pics of the hoses to this though, only a hunch but the hoses seem to be diferant on mine the hose from the egr valve goes into 2 hoses on the egr solenoid
whereas on the download it should go from the egr valve to the bottom connector on the solenoid

the turbo is not as responsive as on my tdi and no whistle at all, if anything there is a slight whine

it ticks over sweet and revs ok but its more like a straight deisel than a turbo

any clues anyone...

very daft idea, but you looked at the air flow meter.. sounds like mine was till had new one fitted. just an idea..

always makes them a little slugish if not working proprely

Zippy

does it have one ?

does the td on a 94 plate have a air flow meter then

i though they are only on the tdi

please advise ?

A 94 plate T2 won't have a MAF unit as it's drive by cable & not drive by wire like the TDI

any other ideas ?

could still use some advise on this one...
thanks

Have you checked the turbo extreme-4x4, pull the intake pipe off and have a look at the play on the shaft by giving it a wiggle, a little play is normal, also check the waste gate valve isn’t stuck open.

Gutless TD

My TDi is doing just the same thing, and it's smoking!

waist gate valve whats that ? please mine is still unfixed

The waste gate (sorry waste not waist) is a valve located in the turbo charger that opens at a set boost pressure, it diverts the exhaust gas that drives the turbo to lessen the pressure in the inlet manifold, stabilize boost pressure. This valve prevents damage to the engine that could be caused by over boost.

If the valve becomes seized, it can stick open, producing a lack of turbo boost, resulting in low power and black smoke.

The valve mechanism is on the outside of the turbo you will find a short rod with adjustment threads at one end coming out of a round cylinder, the actuator and the other end is connected to a lever, you should be able to put a spanner or grips on the lever and move the rod / valve against the pressure of the spring in the actuator to check that it is not stuck and moving ok.

based on that i would say its not moving. i cant move it by hand and can move it 2mm pushing it with a screwdriver or grips.

so how do i free it and what way should it move

My old TD was more sluggish than the TDi that I have now and it smoked where as this TDi doesn't at all, and was also more thirsty
