Did you mean RG58? And solder the PL259 aerial plug on the coax but chances are it'll already have a plug fitted when you get an aerial mounting.

Briggie is our resident CB expert, he must be busy with his grand children as he would normally of jumped on this thread to offer some cracking advice.

If you are thinking of a CB ask yourself what you want it for? If it's short distance stuff consider a hand held as it's less mucking about. Careful radio equipment on ebay as I've seen radios that are described as radios and clearly aren't. Anything that transmits and receives voices is a CB to a lot of people but actually isn't on the CB frequencies.

I have found when I've done my installations that it's better to make up your own soldered unions than a kit. It's just simply easier to thread the coax through the vehicle, but that's for a permanent job, and I don't like seeing cables.

When we go laning we use 2way radios they are cheap now from likes of Asda & all same frequency. Work really well & have more than enough range for convoy.

I agree that type of thing is spot on for that type of use. Plus you can use outside of the truck and talk someone through a difficult spot.

Like I said earlier there's some cheap imported handies that are described as two way radio or even cb but they're far from it and have a potential to be transmitting illegally but worse than that can cause interference for such as emergency services or aircraft. The thing to look for is PMR446 for the handies, they're cheap, have a poor range in built up areas worse but most importantly they're safe.

What frequencies do we run nowadays? I recall the old CB's from the early eighties had "27/81" in a circle stamped on them. They brought out a new band that I trialled for a few months. I don't recall the frequency, but it ran a very short aerial.

I still have my old Multi Mode II SSB in the loft. A big old clumber some rig, but still works after all these years

I was into CB's in a big way back in the early to mid eighties. I ran directional booms, a massive full wave antenna on a telescopic pole & big burners. At the time I lived on top of a very high hill in Oxfordshire. I used to chat to people from other countries when the skip was good.

It's a cb it'll have same channels as anyone else using cb. I've dragged a mag mount antenna behind until we got out of mud. Low branches may knock the mag mount off but other than that if it works which it should. At least buying brand new you won't of had some muppet trying to mess about turning output power up and screwing every preset in sight.

I think the aussies use the handheld ones a fair bit, for giving directions to their mates while they are stood out of harms way

The thunderpole stuff looks good. Im getting a setup put in tomorrow or Thursday but I do have a soft spot for the portable devices, much better having that than hand signals but I doubt there will be anything that taxing at the meet but I hope I'm wrong. The more technical the better :sly

Doug, If you manage to get your setup done before the Wilts meet, I always carry my SWR meter, so I can set you up on the day.
Obviously Briggie is this forums guru, but SWR is Standing Wave Ratio.

As long as it works jim, as long as it works :lol

It will fit in the cubby hole under the heating controls but for now I'm just going to put it in passenger footwell, then move it at a later date.
