hia everyone, yet another query im afraid. i have a very loud grinding noise coming from the front of the terra. its only when moving and in all gears except fourth, iv checked the exhaust and theres no holes/blowing, im at a loss as the fourth gear thing is stumping me. could it be gearbox?? any help or places to check would be greatly appreciated, thanks vince

first thing to do is pull the auto hubs of and give it a run, they may be seizing up, the 4th gear thing is odd, but it could just be that a 4th gear speeds the hubs free up, other than that in fourth the drive is straight through so maybe gearbox, oil? Rick

is it safe to drive with no auto hubs on it? il need to check the gearbox oil yes, whats the best way to do this as i dont have access to ramps? thanks

yes the hubs do nothing other than stop dust and dirt getting in, box oil is easy to check, just lay under and remove half inch square socket bung in the side, it is on the off side of the motor, once out stick your finger in if you cannot touch oil you have an oil problem, Rick

thats great thanks rick, just waiting for the wife to get home and il check it, ready for some new stuff anyway but il check for any leaks

well iv just took the filler plug out and i can get my finger (although i do only have little girly hands) right in but feel no oil:doh, so il have to get some first thing in morning and refill her, cant see anywhere it can have leaked though. i know it will take 3.5l but does anyone know if i can fill it whilst the cars on an angle? i have the front on axle stands but im not prepared to lift the back to level it using the standard car jack, it just doesnt look safe! oh and thanks rick you where correct:clap

Since you can't drive it whilst it's on axle stands, wait untill you remove them, then fill the gearbox up. Simples...

Use a piece of garden hose tied to the fuel filter under the bonnet, with a funnel in, and the other end in the filler. Much easier than crawling underneath wringing out the bottle.
Place a suitable container under to catch the over fill.

Some people lift the nearside a few inches, in order to put an extra 200 ml in.

The front bearing on the input shaft, tends to run a bit dry, and they tend to wear and the extra oil helps. BUT not TOO much extra.

I put Molyslip in mine as a precaution, see other threads...

best regards,

Rustic

correct oil level should be to the bottom of the filler hole, if you got your girly finger in and felt no oil, then with what you describe I suspect your box is stuffed, sorry Rick

i like the hose idea as its gunna be a bugger to get the oil in otherwise, and il put the extra 200ml in and cross my fingers. its been running ok so il fill it up and see how it goes.
can the oil leak out internaly as i cant see where its gone:doh iv had the car 8 months and never checked the gearbox oil but it cant have been this low for long surely?
