Hi All,
I have noticed a grinding/rubbing noise coming from the rear drive chain/diff. Nothing at all when cool but after a few miles it becomes evident. It gets worse around corners. Would this be diff oil issue or would i need to look uj's etc?

Check wheel bearing

Could be a wheel bearing starting to fail.
When the noise appears see if it stops with very slight braking this would indicate a possible wheel bearing issue.

Theres a weird shroud at the gearbox end of the propshaft. Can come loose and the drivetrain rubs on it making grinding noises. Could be this.

Just a case of seating it back in it's place.

I've often looked at that whilst under there and though, jheez there's not much room there :lol I suppose it's there to stop twigs and branches from getting twisted up in the UJ's?

Think its to catch the propshaft if the UJ fails?

I have had a look underneath. Nothing obvious getting caught. Drive shafts do have some slight play in the them. Not a wheel bearing/braking issue I don't think. Would a diff oil change be an idea just to rule that out?

The problem I described it was not obvious to me, Go and give it a wiggle and see. Would not always make a noise either. I used a wooden block and hammer to seat it back in it's place.

I would check the oil, make sure it's nice and clear and manky.

Do you know when the diff oil was last changed, if not for say 15-20k miles, or if uncertain, then worth changing anyway.
Make sure it is LSD oil, around £5 a litre.
Old cast iron diffs 2.8 litres, later pressed steel ones about 1.4 litres.

Maybe also to stop splashed water, gravel mud etc from damaging the oil seal. The propshaft does move in and out as the rear diff deflects etc.
I understand the reason to catch the prop though, more likely reason.:thumb2

No idea when it was done to be honest so I will do that for peace of mind. Just seams strange these noises only appear after travelling a few miles when everything is wam.
