You can't even make it up, Banshee's in the thick of it again :lol

So 3 litre is at home with me getting some love, Grandad has now inherited Nans 58' Chevrolet Matiz :doh as she can't drive it anymore.

She's had an operation on her left leg as they thought she was going to lose her foot to a blood clot, they fitted a stent into her femoral artery and now she's back on her feet BUT unable to feel much in her left foot and as such can't drive a manual.

Went and looked at some Smart ForTwo's on Wednesday and ended up putting a deposit on this :naughty

Fetching it on Saturday on the back of my twin axle :sly :sly

That's the one mate, it only just about went on  It's smaller than I thought, might have to chop it in and get a propper car transporter :doh

Cheers mate

Nah, that is mud from the lake district I aquired when I got stuck in a hole and had to be pulled out by Patrolman Steve :lol He saved my bacon that day that dude did

So looks like we're going to be modding the ForTwo already :lol

Going to refit an earlier 2007 LCD display back into the dashboard, after 2009, SMART "dumbed down" the dipsplay for the American market apparently thus you lost the information relating to what gear you are in other than it just telling you that you're in Automatic mode and more importantly and for the reason that I'm doing this to restore the engine coolant temperature display!!!

The MHD have a bad reputation for spitting a belt out every now and again apparently, a fault caused by "reverberation from the starter motor at certain rev ranges" there was a guide that was fitted as a service recall I'm lead to believe which helped to stop this happen. The belt should be replaced every 35,000 miles

If said belt does go, you will lose the alternator and also the water pump crucially, if Nan doesn't realise that it's gone and doesnt hear it go flying off, she wont realise that she's no coolant flowing around the engine, it will cook itself and then bang goes the engine with no warning!!!!

Hopefully this little mod will solve that issue and I'll deal with tyhe guides at a later date.

What Nan see's now;

What she should see after the LCD Swap:

I'm also going to be doing the Power Steering rack mod too when I see one at the right price come up, she's fine with it now but she's only going to get weaker.

There's also a few interior bits and pieces we will also be doing to make it "prettier" :kissy

Smart for two MHD break down experience !

You're bang up to date with the recall for the drive belt at Smart of Derby / MB Derby we had a few engine failures under warranty due to the drive belt failing as no dash lights come on to tell you anything is wrong until you smell overheating!!

I went to collect a Motorbility Customers car from near Leicester it had only done about 6k miles. As I was driving to Derby I heard a strange sound from the back of the vehicle. I thought I had run over some road debris so pulled up in a lay-by and got out to check the tyres all round. I had switched the engine off and removed the key as it was a slightly dodgy district so did not want to take any chances.

When I got back in the car it would not start and clearly something had failed there was just a light whirring noise when I tried to crank it. I had to be recovered by the RAC via Mondial. Transpires that the stop stop system on the so called "Micro Hybrid Drive" would not work as the alternator has some sort of starting facility built into it and as the drive belt had broken hence no start !

The belt failure is caused by a slight mis-alignment and the mod is something simple like an extra washer and guide ! Unless you know different you might have issues with the gear display modification as a lot of Smart stuff is not very interchangeable.

Zaaaaaaaaaac. You need a bigger driiiiiiiive :lol:lol
You are the Maaaaaaaan

Is the replacement display just plug n pray or do you have to give it some extra wiring?

How come you're a techie and not a mechanic?

I've just come off the phone with SMART Drayton in Wolverhampton and they have confirmed that it came back in, in 2012 for the guide to be fitted and also went back in, in 2013 to have "dangerous" stereo wiring inspected

The LCD is just plug and play apparently :thumb2, Not only does plugging the old clock in restore the temp gauge, but it tells you what gear you are in when in fully auto mode whereas the new clock doesn't, only when in the triptronic setting.

IT pays the bills mate, Mechanics is just a side interest that could always be a fallback career path I suppose if I really fall out of love with IT

Plug & Play

I assume that your particular model Smart only shows the gear you are in when in manual mode. I am a little sceptical that the Plug and Play will just work unless there is a software change as well. Only reason I say this is from my memory the older Smarts are a 6 speed gearbox and the later ones were only 5 speed ? If yours is 6 speed then it might be as you say.

You are probably aware but there is a quite active unofficial Smart community website (can't remember the name but Smart used to monitor it unofficially for customer feedback!)with lots of information on customising the interiors, information on Brabus (Official) and I think Blue Wave aftermarket upgrades.

I often brought in customers cars that were loaded with aftermarket chunky stainless gearsticks, door handles, instrument bezels etc.
